I got one of the $50 eBay kits, installed it, and adjusted my cables at the same time.

Bought my car with the factory 996, put in the 997 standard felt pretty much the same, swapped for the 997 SSK.

IMHO, i wouldn't buy that kit you linked, i'd rather have a 997 shifter or 996SSK or 997ssk used from the marketplace here on RL.

I originally purchased the cheaper one but getting it adjusted perfectly was going to be an issue.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I just drove a car with a short shifter installed and like it. I dont now which one it was but in looking for one I found these on ebay.

Any reason NOT to buy this? B&M and Porsche oem are $300-$400 and change how bad could this be for $55?
All SSK's are not the same -- didn't like the shifter in my car when i bought it and it took two more before i found what i was looking for... so yeah it took 3 shifters in the first 5mo of ownership to get what i wanted. Bottom line, if you like what you drove, do what you need to to find out what shifter was in it. That's the only way to duplicate what you experienced.

Before I put the 997S tranny in my car I just use a 997 shifter with the 996 tranny. I found that to be perfect since it just slightly shortened the shift. I worry if it is too short that I am more likely to miss-shift on the track....Don't know if that is true but that was my thinking.
I got mine from Schnell Performance for $129.00. Looks exactly the same as the one you pictured from ebay. I have no complaints and it is a drastic change from the factory unit. I would go for it. I agree the other options are too expensive.
I disagree i think u get what u pay for but u should buy for your end game. If u just want a shorter shift for a better feel while on the street or if u want a performance gain for track work will determime how much money u should spend. The agency power unit was short and felt pretty good. It seems to be middle of the road in price, around $250-300. I didnt even know my car had it. I purchased the numeric shifter and cables because i wanted to go with a high performance product to compliment future upgrades. I can tell u there is a sizeable difference between the 2 shifters but may not be worth the price for u.
Bought my car with the factory 996, put in the 997 standard felt pretty much the same, swapped for the 997 SSK. Huge difference with the 997 SSK OEM. Love the thing. IMO spend the dollars for the best part, don't half-***.
I got an ebay shifter, figured I'd risk the $60. Happy with it. Definitely an upgrade from the stock shifter. Only issue is I need to tighten the main nuts down every few months as they loosen up.
I installed an OEM
997.424.983.00
short shifter and it has zero play and shifts better than new. I originally purchased the cheaper one but getting it adjusted perfectly was going to be an issue. This unit is plug and play, 20 minutes and a perfect first time installation. You do get what you pay for JMHO
I agree completely with this. The shortness of the throw is such a personal opinion. For me, the 996 NA C2 fits perfectly with the throw of the 997 shifter. Too short is strange for me and doesn't fit the rest of the vehicle.
i just order billet aluminum bushings for my 997ssk hoping to get best of both.. gt3 shifter is a stock shifter with metal bushings.. ssk is just a shorter throw shifter.. u can never win with porsche..
Numeric. Amazing, especially when you're really pushing it. Quick and accurate rifle bolt feel and a work of art that's a shame to cover up with the console.
Not in the price range you're looking for but there's a group buy here now.
There's something seriously wrong with me. I always try to save a buck. And it's something of a game to see how little I can spend to get equivalent functionality to the full price of what I want.
I installed one of those fleabay kits in my 987.1 Cayman. I was doing the console repaint and wanted Numeric cables, so I went this way instead of the full priced Numeric front end. The Numeric is amazing, and had the extra $600 not been an issue then, it would definitely shift better.
The aluminum clone kit works fine with the Numeric cables. I actually adjusted it to be harder to go into reverse than stock. I really have to crank it over to the left to hit reverse. The OEM let me slide into Reverse when I wanted first, so I effectively gated it off from myself via adjustment.
I like the combination in my car. Far from as silky as stock, but feels a bit more raw and substantial. But, really, if money is no object, get the best parts you can.
I got one of the $50 eBay kits, installed it, and adjusted my cables at the same time. In my opinion, the options are all steel levers, and all functionally the same. They reduce throw, but do the same job the same way. The differences are lever length and fulcrum location.
From what i could tell many of the products on the market were also copies of the same thing and maybe from the same Chinese Factory: Schnell, Racing Dynamics, B&M, Agency Power, etc.
So that said, I like the one Ive got and would enthusiastically recommend it to others. Adjust the bushings right and dont forget the lithium grease during assembly. Add a thin washer here or there if you have any slack.
Your mileage may vary!
As I recall, they were about $400 at Sunset six months ago when I was shopping..
The stock 997 shifter has about a 20% shorter throw than a 996, the GT3 about 40%.
I'd have been happy with a GT3, My kids bought the Numeric for my birthday.
The numeric has three different settings, I went with the middle one, which is about 40%, but is a way nicer piece of kit.
My recipe for shifter happiness (99 C2, DD ) is : 997 SSK with Phenix alloy bushings and , for comfort, Function First extended **** stick with a Delrin ****. Could'n't be happier with this setup
What is the difference between 997 GT3 and 997 SSK? Also, do I need new cables for either of these? I have the opportunity to get a used like new 997 GT3 shifter I need to know if its plug and play like the standard 997 shifter or if I need GT3 cables.

This is what I run, I like it a lot (best price I found also). Has some lateral play I am not a fan of but I suspect all shifters do. I will consider the function first bushing kit with it.
I have one of those kits sitting on the bench ready to go and didn't know if I wanted to install it until reading your post. I second the Function 1st Bushings, I would NOT get the hardest (Racing) compound though. I did the bushings when I had the IMS done. It made a noticeable difference, much better shifts and way more direct feel. Goes great with the RSS motor mounts. The Racing inserts to give you a little feedback where you can feel vibrations at times, that's why I would go with the softer compound. I'm probably going to install the shifter in the off season.
My understanding is 997 GT3 uses metal components, feels sharper, but the throw isn't really shortened. The 997 SSK uses plastic parts, but is significantly shorter throw. The 997 standard they say is shorter than 996, but my experience was nearly identical 996 vs standard 997. 997 SSK for me was a huge upgrade vs standard 997.
