Im sure I could have used a cheaper oil, but it doesnt need replacement often, and I have a LSD, and wanted it to shift exactly how Porsche intended.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

9 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just came back from the dealer with 3 litres of transmission oil. $150 Canadian dollars. I wasnt surprised. But it got me thinking. I have a manual Jeep Wrangler. 2 quarts of transmission fluid was around $90. My old Subaru was expensive too. What is with the price of transmission fluid? Seems to be higher than other bought items at the dealer. Platinm lined?

POST 2Original post

Yep. Its often already a high quality fluid, aka, Mobil, but after Porsche gets ahold of it, puts any requirement around it, puts it in their own container, and then stocks it, its double. Im sure I could have used a cheaper oil, but it doesnt need replacement often, and I have a LSD, and wanted it to shift exactly how Porsche intended.

POST 3Original post

Porsche don't R&D their own lubricants, there are very big companies that do that for them (Exxonmobil, Shell or any petroleum supplier). All car-manufacturers, Porsche included, use off-the-shelf solutions from one of the big boys. They simply test if that particular lubricant is compatible with the application by testing if it works, and then slap an "Porsche approved" label on it. Nothing more. Usually smart people find out what particular lubricant was used in which particular car, and simply put that in. It's the exact same stuff. Dealer lubricants are re-brands of existing products, nothing more.

POST 4Original post

^^ Correct. For example, I believe that Porsche Transmission oil is actually this: Mobilube PTX Formula A (SAE 75W-90)

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Mobilube PTX, can only find it at Amazon.ca. 50% more than dealer fluid. Oh Canada!

POST 6Original post

Just searched the above from Murphyslaw, $17.xx a quart on Amazon or from Walmart.

In Canada we have the Porsche tax and the Canada tax...Whether I am buying car parts or for my other hobbies (boats, atvs, fishing), everything is way more expensive. A gallon of Mercury 2 stroke premium oil is $25 at Walmart in the U.S. In Canada it is $60 Canadian $. Even after conversion, still around $45 US$. Alas, this is a first world problem.

POST 8Original post

Wow! I thought my state was overboard on taxes, they're talking about taxing texts now, but you guys take a beating!

What I meant by the Canada tax was like the Porsche tax. Yes, taxes are higher in Canada. That being said, we do have universal healthcare and other social benefits that the U.S. doesnt have. The reality is that Canadian pricing is based on a simple concept - pricing is based on what the market will bear. It really is that simple. All of this being said, Suncoast sells the oil for $39.95 a litre. More expensive than a Canadian Porsche dealer.
