Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that report identifying a cause
1
0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Leading evidence: 'gravity' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'gravity' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check overflow' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
Check the overflow to see if you're low on coolant, if so you've found half your issue (the other half being where its leaking from).

"What is this leaking?" would be a good name for a repair manual for these cars.

See 13 and 12, you've got a bit of work to do to replace those.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Long story short...
my 996 sat for about 5 months while I was out of town. There was something leaking and a neighbor thinks it was coming from this hose and wrapped the white plastic around it.
I started the car and drove around the block, and low and behold there was a bit of fluid leaking. It doesn't seem to be an oil. More like water or coolant, but not the normal coolant smell.
any help?
thanks
Was it outside? Could be water that needs to run out through the drains. Where is it leaking, front, left side front, left side rear..you see what I mean? What house and what white plastic? Doesn't make sense.
We're going to need some pics or something else to go on. These cars use weird Porsche coolant, so it might not look or smell like the green coolant you're use to. Check the overflow to see if you're low on coolant, if so you've found half your issue (the other half being where its leaking from).
Not being oil is a good thing. Not to get your hopes up, but there is a very small chance it could be fluid from the motor mounts collapsing. That might be best case scenario, but like i said, don't get your hopes up.
"What is this leaking?" would be a good name for a repair manual for these cars.
oops, uploaded the wrong picture. New one with red arrow pointing.
was outside, backed into a slanted driveway. Its dripping down to an area near the driver's rear wheel. I have a feeling that is due to gravity.
not sure what the hose is, looking in the manual and trying to find it
Good lord, what is going on to the right of that taped hose? looks like a bird's nest.
And why is that hose taped like that in the first place?
Questions aside, this is the right place to ask, I bet someone smarter than I will have an answer.
Hose goes to AOS from the front of the engine which connects to that T piece that always breaks:
See 13 and 12, you've got a bit of work to do to replace those. Drain coolant, replace hoses, vacuum refill.
Coolant can be bought from the dealership only have total quantity is required as its a 50/50 water coolant mix. If the car is new to you do a coolant flush. If you're game do the water pump and thermostat while you've got the coolant drained.
Obviously easier said than done - if you're not confident send it to an OPC or reputable indy.
