Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

So, I'm hoping to put some of that experience to use by taking care of my 911 myself.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I thought I'd join this forum since I just bought my first Porsche. It's a 1999 911 Carrera Coupe. I'm not a paying member, so I can't post pictures, but it looks almost identical to the car in
this
thread. My car only had about 39,500 miles on it when I bought it. The interior is in amazing condition, as is the exterior. The IMS bearing had been upgraded a few years ago, so I didn't need to worry about that. The mechanic who did the PPI before I bought it couldn't find anything wrong with the car. However, I'm still going to have my go-to garage look over the car.
I'm absolutely in love with this car. It drives like nothing else I've ever driven before. The sound of the motor alone is enough to put a smile on my face.
I'm going to be ordering the Bentley's for this car soon, as I plan on doing basic maintenance myself. I've been learning a lot about cars by working on an old air-cooled Volkswagen I own. So, I'm hoping to put some of that experience to use by taking care of my 911 myself. I'm sure I'll have questions for the members here, so I hope you all will be willing to share your knowledge with me!
Congrats brother!
Join up and post pics.
EDIT: He text me pics today (02-28) and I posted them below, but decided to edit this post to get them closer to the top for him.

Nice rIde! Blow off the Bentley's manual and get the 101 996 projects book and the 996 Torque Guide. They are a heck of a lot more useful. The 101 even has a list of tools to purchase to work on your 911 that is excellent. The '99 is the best year model Porsche ever made. It has all of the nimbleness of the 993 but with more HP.

I've got to disagree on the Bentley vs. 101 projects... 101 is great if you just want to do basics and "skim" information - granted, it's got engine removal etc. but they skip a lot of stuff and have virtually no background information. Bentley sort of errs in the opposite direction, so it's probably overkill for many "home mechanics" and it's expensive - the reason I like it is, because just about everything is in there, albeit difficult to find at times... + 1 on the KG Torque book - invaluable!!! Easy access to torque values for every nut/bolt on the car (that you actually need a value for).
Congrats on the car and welcome to the 911 club! Def join the site as a paying memeber, so much info here Id feel guilty otherwise.
You mentioned the imsb already being done. Thats great; but be advised theres two main versions (there are others) a retrofit and a solution. The former is a wear item and the latter is a lifetime part. Just a heads up as some folks think either is a permanent fix and is def not the case. Either way you should be set for a min given the retrofit is rated at 6yr/75k mi.
Thanks everyone. I'm really enjoying the car. It didn't come with the owner's manual, though, and I haven't located one yet. There are a few things in the car whose function I don't quite understand, so I'd like to get a copy. Also, does the owner's manual have recommendations for RPM ranges? I tend to keep the car around 3,000 RPM, but that's solely based on the sound the engine makes at that RPM. It seems to be the Goldie Locks Zone (not too high or too low, but just about right). However, I'm basing this on comparison with the sound of the engines of other cars I've owned. Not sure if I should be comparing a Porsche engine with a VW engine, though.
Thanks for the tip!
Good to know. I'll probably just get all of the books mentioned. The 101 Projects is pretty cheap, and for certain books I like to have a hard copy. PDFs are great, but if I'm wrenching outside I'd rather have an actual paper book to reference. No screen glare or battery dying with a good old fashion book.
Wrote a long reply to this thread the other day, but was notified that an administrator had to approve the message for some reason. My response seems to have been lost in limbo, since it hasn't been posted yet. So, I'll keep it short. Thanks to everyone for all the info and warm welcome!
Welcome. Love your wheels. And the year. Color ain't bad either.
No, I'm not biased...
I need a service manual too. Sorta pricey though. I should look for used ones. Anyone know of a good source?
TIA.
