Texting/phone use while driving is a big issue here, along with the usual drunk driving & teens doing silly things that get them in trouble.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

ya know my 1999 cerrera seems quick and a blast to drive when its just me. after a while of enjoying the thrill of these awesome cars... you get comfy and a little to confident in its ability lol
driving to church yesterday a charger with the 396 badges rolled up on me. gave me a thumbs up and then just cruised a little behind me for a bit. then he came up window to window again and gave me the smirk and head nod. I reciprocated and shifted into 3rd gear at about 68mph which felt great putting me around 4k rpms and launched it nicely thinking "yes... gonna get this" .... nope lol that guys spanked me like a read headed step child acting up in walmart lol we shot up to about 105 in no time and both let off.
I cruised up to his window, gave him the thumbs up and he gave me the thumbs up back but added a new smirk... looked something like "now make me a samich" lol
it was fun and I always like a little road thrill with good spirited car guys but man I wish these were just a little faster
I know right !!!! lol this was strictly a straight line down the highway... not fair lol those cars are like 4000lbs and nothing but rockets straight forward. but ... i'll give em the respect he deserved ... his car was fast, when he pulled ahead it was taillights and exhaust... easily.
still fun
lol
Carrera's aren't exactly drag queens, as much as they're track queens. Bigger HP boats do well in straight lines, but are less practical as get away vehicles when you need to make calculated turns.

996 Carrera - 1:15.90
The fast guy on a track down the straights is the same guy that got through the previous corner quickly. Back in my sprint car days in a trophy dash the guy in second place behind me had a killer motor. I could hear him at the end of the straights but not coming out of the corner. This went on for all 8 laps! I won and on reviewing the film he hadn't figured out how to turn left properly! This was not because I was good I had just figured out how to turn the corner! Later in a feature race I was coming out of turn four and he and his car was laying on it's top in the middle of the track. Don't think he ever figured it out. Good thing his daddy had lots of money!
I know this will sound lame and oldmanish, but I've never felt comfortable racing someone else on the street since you have no idea what modifications have been made. For all you know, that Charger could have been a 700 hp mod with the 396 badge left on to keep it less obvious.
Yea there are some King Kongs out there but if you want to be in the running in a straight, Consider this. I have a Crossfire SRT6 and unless it's a Vette 06 or a blacked out dodge with a funny Hawk looking thing on the side, you got a real good chance to smoke em in a street brawl. It's all in the launch .

all good comments guys
I just turned 40 and my crazy driving days are somewhat ... somewhat behind me. but its fun every now and then to have a little fun and let loose.
that car sounded mean and it might have been modded which is no biggy. I'm happy with my 996. love my 986 as well which is even slower. last year I sold my vette which was faster than both of them. but the Porsche .. you guys know... its a Porsche thing. they are just smiles to drive.
I do wish they were a little quicker though. its all good
With 475 lb-ft of normally-aspirated torque, a pretty decent 8-speed gearbox, and 0-60 down near 4 seconds, this might not be the best car to compete with in a straight line with a 996.
The weight difference (the Charger is 4,400 pounds...holy hell!) probably helped it seem like less of a slaughter; no matter what kind of stability control trickery is involved, that's a LOT of car when it comes to cornering. I suspect that on a sufficiently windy course, the 996 would at least have a fighting chance.
It strikes me as funny that you street-raced (or stop-light drag raced) another car on your way to church...sounds like a Roadkill episode.
RE: the "old man" comments about street vs. track - being on the way to church might get St. Pete to move you into the heavenly equivalent of the TSA precheck line, but it won't make you less dead (or, in the event of no death, won't prevent you from getting a summons for reckless driving).
Note that I am suggesting that OP is reckless or otherwise distributing dispersions...rather, the "old guy" driving style makes a lot more sense to me (in some circumstances) than it did when I was 16.
lol ya mess with big dog... get bitten
lol I jumped ahead of him for about 2 seconds. but once I heard him drop down he pulled forward pretty well. it was pretty much just a 3rd gear run for me. by the time I shifted to 4th it was 100mph and we both let off. he was about 4 car lengths ahead of me at that time. I have no desire to do 100+ mph. even 100 is more than I like to play around with. 0-60 is where the fun is at for me.
A little fun is always nice until you get caught. I had a guy urging me to run one day in my Vette. Apparently he didn't know what that tiny lil ZR-1 emblem signified and thought he had a fat juicy C4 Corvette to pick on instead. As a very experienced drag racer I've beaten many more powerful cars in lesser cars. I can get a huge jump on the inexperienced. In a real drag race on a track I beat the same car I was driving except the other guy had a bolt on supercharger for a 100 hp advantage. I beat him off the tree and got a good launch. He spun badly. By the end of the 1/4 mile he was going 12 mph faster but I got there first. We had similar ETs but I had almost a half second on him in reaction time. I remember watching him closing fast in my mirror.
where I live, if you're caught at anything 31mph over the posted speed limit, you loose your car for 7 days and an immidiate 7 day license suspension. You are also charged with "stunting" & all costs associated to getting your car back are on you.
Are there hordes of racers hitting pedestrians and mounties or something? I don't see the need for such punitive responses to having a wee bit of automotive fun.
The last time I was over 100 near a policeman, he was on a Harley & I was in a peloton of a 930 turbro, 944 turbro and my 350z. We didn't lift, and he pretended not to see us
. I think it's even illegal or against the rules for a bike cop to chase people at that speed. Odds are way too high that the bike cop will die & the drivers will get away.
No matter what you've got, there's always a faster car out there.
I feel pretty confident that I could take most cars in my 991 Turbo S, but every now and then I read one of those stories about a Honda Civic that weighs under 2,500 lbs. with over 1,000 HP. There's always somebody faster.
I'm not much of a street racer. There's too much risk involved in street racing.
I'm on business travel right now and I got a free upgrade to one of those boats (there are benefits to travelling 7 of the last 9 weeks).
I miss my 996 worse than I did when I was in a Chevy Spark. This thing can't fit in a parking spot, and god forbid you're trying to get *out* of a parking spot into a narrow lane.
I loved my vette last year when I had but the one thing that always stuck out to me was how long the front end was. after a got my boxster a few years ago I was sold on these smaller more agile cars. thus the vette is gone and the boxster has a friend now
nope. just a typical over reaction from our folks in power. some street racing kid hit some drunk driver in Toronto, and the timing of the FnF movies, we now have some BS law that makes the police the jury and the judge right there on the roadside where they confiscate your car for 7 days and suspend your license while they're at it.
it's done absolutely nothing in terms of making streets safer. $$$ generator.
I know of 2, but both got the charges reduced.....but still...they lost their car for 7 days, had to pay the impound fee's to get their car back.
Its 100% BS.
That sucks. Radar detector plus laser jammer it is!
Some US departments have focused on left lane enforcement, and I've seen behavior improve in my driving lifetime since '95 or so. Texting/phone use while driving is a big issue here, along with the usual drunk driving & teens doing silly things that get them in trouble. I'd like to see more difficult licensing requirements that prove a commitment to understanding the rules & ability to apply them. So many people seem oblivious to the rules of the road, it's an objective hazard.
you will love it!! amazing how different they are. the 911 is fun for being faster and more room so my little guy can come with my wife and I. but the boxster I think truly makes you make that argument to others about the "driving experience" of a Porsche. the boxster handles so differently and IMO the 5 speed manual feels so much more real than the 6 speed manual in the 911.
funny how to ME the boxster with all the body mods I made looks meaner and faster but I never get called out in it. I've had this 911 for just under 3 months now and even my wife has commented on how often I get revved by people wanting to race lol maybe its that taco wing lol
174.6 in. long x 69.5 in. wide (My '99 996)
176.5 in. long x 71.0 in. wide (My '96 C4 Corvette)
I don't know if the new Corvettes are longer and wider (and I was too lazy to Google it this time); I assume that like new Porsches, they are bloating out over time.
There are a combination of things - how much nose/tail extends past the axles, the difference in wheelbase (the Corvette wheelbase is 4" greater than the 996), the view from the cabin out over that monstrously long Corvette hood - that make the 996 seem much more lithe than the Corvette...
yes, I sure am. here's a vid of me and an M3 playing around at Calabogie. I'm not the best driver and need a lot more practice. next track day for me is July 28th. can't wait!

puts smiles on my face but if someone came along and offered me the right money, I'd have a hard time saying no.
The Corvette is the only car I've ever owned where I had to string up "don't run into crap" danglies. Public service announcement: If you bought into the whole "Mothers Power Cone" thing and subsequently regretted it, you can use it as a paint-safe "don't run into crap in your own garage" dangler.
I love the Corvette, but not so much the massive hood and halo-induced blind spot...
