Anyway, in cleaning up a bunch of tools that are still laying around the shop, I ran into my 1/2 torque wrench with the 19mm wheel lug socket still attached.

Even still, checking wheel bolts should be part of a regularly schedule routine, not unlike checking the oil, checking pressures, visual inspections of the car, etc.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I happened to have my car back in my shop last night after doing a whole boatload of work over the last couple months (see: "CEL came back..."). Anyway, in cleaning up a bunch of tools that are still laying around the shop, I ran into my 1/2 torque wrench with the 19mm wheel lug socket still attached. Just for the heck of it, I decided to check my wheel lugs (nuts on wheel studs with 15mm spacers front and rear). Hmmm, first one I checked was a little loose - I got about 1/8 of a turn before the wrench clicked (96 ft lbs) - interesting... Moving on, it turns out I got about an 1/8th of a turn on 3 of the nuts and two of them were actually "finger loose" - close to a full turn before I couldn't turn by hand without the wrench - scary! Both rear wheels were like this!!! Not so the fronts - All nuts were still properly torqued to 96 ft lbs. I was meticulous about torquing the studs to 30 ft lbs (ECS specification) - in fact the 5mm hex socket on a couple of the studs almost stripped out at this torque. In addition, the studs were still properly torqued - it seems like the nuts just backed off... I'll have to keep a close eye on these things...

POST 3Original post

There is something very satisfying about torquing wheel studs, I do mine once a month or so.I guess I need to get out more.

POST 4Original post

Too funny...when i swap my summer wheels for winter wheels and back, i just tighten them until i can't go anymore. Never had a problem. Should i get one of these torque wrenches ?

Nah! Just crank 'em down till they strip and back 'em out 1/4 turn.
