Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I have some techniques for setting the timing for both 3.4 and 3.6 engines (VarioCam and VarioCamPlus) that can be used without most of the tools, although holding the cams on the slotted end will help with the accuracy.
Leading evidence: 'Use without most of the tools, although holding the cams' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'tools' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Adjust timing' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I am trying to remember from the pictures what you got, I think it was the tools for locking the crank at TDC, the hold down tool for the slotted end of the cams and the tools for locking the intake cam vane assembly.

You really have to have them, we just set cam timing for someone that drove 4 hours to the shop today...

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I need to adjust the timing on my
996 '02 C4S 3.6L
engine and I wonder if someone would be interested in renting me the tools.
From the factory manual it seems that what I would need are tools
# 9612 (locking device for camshaft), 9611 and 9634
(holding down device for camshaft), but if I am missing something I would appreciate the input.
I live in Rye, NY. Off course, I am willing to provide a deposit for the cost of the tools until they are returned to the owner.
Please, if anyone has those sitting around, let me know.
Thanks
I just edit the post because I have referenced the wrong tools for my engine model. The Sir Tool P260 (for earlier engines) is aprox $550, but I need to research the price of the correct tools for my car
Bump..Anyone??
bought those. THANKS
Doug, one question: can I reuse the bolt on the valve cover of the 996? I looks that some of those (which location I can not identify now) are micro-encapsulated. Could you help me with this?
Thanks...again
Congratulations on getting the tools, and at a pretty good price. I am trying to remember from the pictures what you got, I think it was the tools for locking the crank at TDC, the hold down tool for the slotted end of the cams and the tools for locking the intake cam vane assembly.
I don't think you got the hold down tools for use once the cam cover is off and you want to remove the cams. PM me with your email address and I can send you some pics and instructions for removing the cam cover, cams, timing etc. The timing tool you got for the intake cam really doesn't set the timing, it is used to hold the cam while you tighten the nut on the vane assembly. I don't think you will need this unless you remove the vane assembly.

As for the cam cover bolts, not sure if they are micro-encapsulated, but I reused mine. I put sealant under the head of the bolts for a few threads prior to re-installing them and have had no problems. The combination of this and the sealant on the head to cover should do the trick.
In the past we have rented them, but people lacking integrity illustrated that was a mistake.. You really have to have them, we just set cam timing for someone that drove 4 hours to the shop today... He tried doing the procedure without them and he wasn't successful on multiple occasions.
