Based on the ones I've tried in the same car: I don't like the notchiness of the B+M, 996 stock (well used) is sloppier than the 997 stock shifter.

I used their silicon hose wrap on the cables and i was careful that the didnt lay against anything.

Can someone get me a link to numeric shifter please and details about recommended cables?

Suggestion
So far, I have transitioned from replacing bits and pieces on my OEM 996 shifter > B&M knock-off short shifter > Numeric.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Can someone please explain to a noob the difference between factory 6 speed shifter vs numeric shifter and cables. Ive driven 6k spirited miles in my 03 c4s with stock shifter. I see the upgrade is very high on almost everyones list of top mods but dont really understand what improves?
thanks
There is a YUGE difference in terms of throw, precision and tactile feedback when going from a stock 996 shifter to just about any of the aftermarket options.
So far, I have transitioned from replacing bits and pieces on my OEM 996 shifter > B&M knock-off short shifter > Numeric.
I think most non-professional home-gamers would be very satisfied with a shimmed $80 Amazon B&M style short shifter. The Numeric certainly will take you from an A- to an A+ but you will be paying an additional $550-620 to get there.
I just resent installed Bens ball bearing shifter upgrade, and the improvement over the 997 shifter is incredible. The throw is short and very precise.
I got it from here uniwerksdesign.com
Yep. Thats the one.
You have to remove the lever and flip it around so that the bend points towards the passenger side. I think these were specd for RHD vehicles. Other than that, just shim the fulcrum to remove any side-to-side play (not necessary but I was being super OCD when I was tinkering with mine).
Now that I have the Numeric installed, I have a personal frame of reference for how good the knock-off is.
On (my) scale of 1-100:
996 OEM - 75
Amazon SS (shimmed) - 90
Numeric - 98
Disclaimer: I am a nobody with zero pro P-car experience. These are solely my personal observations/thoughts on the matter.
I am very happy with my FF set-up (997 shifter, metal bushings + trans insert). It has completely solved the concerns that I had with my other set-ups (original OEM, and 997 shifter). I have driven the numeric shifter + cables, and it is very good, it is as advertised.
Numeric will buzz and vibrate a lot...would be annoying in a street car IMO.
996 CUP cables will also buzz and vibrate.
Keep the stock cables and upgrade the shifter to a Function First kit, or a 997.2 GT3 shifter.
Avoid the 997 GT3 short shifter, it is reported in many threads here that it can be difficult to shift.
When I had my 996C2 I had the 7.2 GT3 shifter with stock cables and it was excellent.
My 6-GT3 is getting a CUP setup soon but it's a 99% track car so buzzing won't bother me.
I got no added noise with my numeric shifter and cables. I used their silicon hose wrap on the cables and i was careful that the didnt lay against anything.
Thanks for all the great information and personal experiences. Dont intend to do anymore track days, just used as an aggressive night/weekend fun car. So jealous of those of you who can do your own work, but I dont mind paying for skilled/quality work.
This forum adds SO much to the overall enjoyment Ive gotten since I bought my 1st pcar 4 months ago. The breathe and depth of knowledge is amazing, and for a total car noob like me, Im trying to absorb as much as possible.
Thanks again
FWIW theres been little talk of the B+M shifter. Thats the one I have in my car and for me the feel is a big change from stock and the price was right. Cant speak about any other because I have this one and upgrades from stock but thats my personal opinion. Good luck with your choice.
I don't think you can evaluate the options until you've tried them like PFran has. Saying the B+M or any other shifter is the bees knees is not very useful if it isn't compared to the other options. I don't opine on the greatness of the FunctionFirst for this reason - I've never tried it. I love every other product I've purchased from Luka, but until I have it in the same car I've tried the other shifters in, I can't really say.
Based on the ones I've tried in the same car: I don't like the notchiness of the B+M, 996 stock (well used) is sloppier than the 997 stock shifter. The Numeric is head and shoulders above the rest - it sets the bar against which I compare any other 996 shifter.
Now as to whether the 997 SSK (or some other shifter) is 90% of the Numeric, I can't say. Once you've driven with it, it is difficult to go back to a different setup and get the same enjoyment out of rowing through the gears.
I find the difference dramatic, but maybe I haven't found the next best one that is almost as good (997 SSK, 997 Cup?). I won't know until I've tried.
My Numeric doesn't make a peep, so for whomever has rattles, you are doing something different than I did/do.
I keep finding these things cheaper and cheaper. I seriously wonder what the difference is between Ben’s at $155 v. this one at $40?
...I know, $115.

I plan tracking my C4S sometimes, so reading the thread I'm coming to the conclusion that I probably need numeric shifter.
Is this the one you guys are talking about

Also, I've seen some suggested keeping stock cables, others say gotta use different cables. Whats the difference?
Edited:
The shifter in that auction wouldn't fit any 996/997 I've had apart.
This is an example of the cheapo knockoff of the B&M type:

Btw... I dug through my Amazon purchase history and here is the shifter that I had in my car up until a few days ago. It was a huge improvement over the sloppy OEM unit that was in the car when I picked it up.

I agree entirely and am a huge Numeric fan. One of my cars came with a B&M installed and I didn't care for it.
I was just telling those guys if they were going to go cheap, to at least get the one that will fit their 996.
I'm confused, I had a link to this exact numeric shifter model but on different web site and the link you provided shows the same one and you quoted me that it won't fit?
That was my error then. I must've confused your link and 808Bill's. Sorry. I fixed the post above.
The one you linked at uspmotorsports looks like the Numeric (although their
shifter handle
is upside down, lol).
I'd buy direct from Numeric and cut out the middle man. Call Faith and tell her what you are trying to do, and she'll get you the right parts. Don't forget the
special wrench
if you buy the cables.
I have this one shipping to me today. I figure even if it's a little better than the sloppy stock shifter it'd be $60 well spent. It'll be my stepping stone towards numeric.
So I just picked up my new to me 996 today and spent 5 hours driving back home.
It has a B&M short shift and I have to say it's one of the major weaknesses of this car, I really don't like it. Thankfully still has the stock shifter in a box to revert back. Does anyone have experience with the B&M and the function first? I don't mind the factory throw, just want better feel.
Yes, I felt the same way. I got a 2002 that had a B&M installed, I wasn't a fan of how it shifted, so I moved the Numeric over from my 2000, and haven't looked back. It has three different length settings so you can control how short the throw is. One of these days I'd like to try the FunctionFirst for comparison sake.
Somebody with more play money than me ought to get one of each shifter and do a YouTube video comparison with measurements, etc. in the same car. The shifter question comes up a lot.
I also wonder if my shifting complaints also might have to do with a shot transmission or engine mount. Slight vibration at idle, but otherwise the engine is silky smooth at speed
Congrats on the new 996. Details? Photos?
Ive decided shifter wise to wait until next PCA meeting/gathering and see if I can get 1st hand look/feel on alternative shifters. I tend to procrastinate anyway so I wasnt replacing my stock anytime soon. Winter tires and new summer tires for next year are needed first.
Haven't pulled off the shift boot yet, but the box it's in has the B&M stickers and the instruction manual from b&m. I was actually kind of surprised based on what I was reading here, I figured that maybe it was an eBay shifter till I got home and started going through the box of stuff the previous owner gave me and found the B&M stuff.
The car I just got is a 2001 c2 with about 100k on it. Great shape interior and exterior wise. Just needs a solid detail. Mechanically well taken care of, but going to do a full fluids swap soon. I'm sure new trans fluid won't hurt!
Not sure how the B&M is, but it looks similar to the Schnell short throw that I installed. Overall it's not bad for a street car upgrade, reverse is a little weird to get into, but the rest of the gears are pretty smooth. The only thing I can note as a mild downside is that the protruding arm that the shifter fits over isn't as snug as the factory, so the shift **** will tend to slide up after some hard shifting and needs to be pressed back down into place. On the street not a big deal, but on the track could be very troublesome.
