Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hey All, Just became the proud owner of a 2001 Cobalt Blue 996 6-speed. I noticed while driving semi-aggresively in second, third, and fourth gears there is a clicking or light grinding noise coming from the shift **** only while in gear. I'm not super familiar with 911's so I don't know if this is normal. The clicking noise does not come in when driving softly or at low RPMs, only at higher RPMs and gets more successive the higher the RPMs get. Only happens in gear. When I move the shifter while in gear slightly the clicking goes away. Is this normal? Is it the shift **** or linkage? Or worse? The car drives beautifully and shifts great in every gear, the clutch is perfect.

POST 2Original post

No, it is not normal. Chipped tooth in a high gear? Shifter alignment? Vibration causing noise at the shift console? Spare change in the seat tracks, or in the center console?

POST 3Original post

Worn out trans and motor mounts cause weird issues in these cars too. The torque on the system may be twisting the drivetrain and causing a noise or vibration to pop up.

POST 4Original post

Sounds like the shift sleeve is engaging too deep. These trans have a design problem with the shift sleeve not engaging far enough (second gear pop-out), there are several ways to make the shift sleeve engage further. The factory solution is to readjust the shim stack, G-Box has a modified detent, CMS makes a modified "shift arrestor",some people have installed a ball under the detent spring. There should only be one of these "solutions" used to make the shift sleeve engage further. If more than one is used the sleeve may go too deep and be contacting the gear causing the rattle/cli8ck. Of couse there could also be a problem with the linkage worn/broke, or a snap ring that has came out of the groove. A chipped tooth. More detail of the history of the trans, or if any repairs have been done may be necessary for a good diagnosis theory though. Also does it do this in gears 2-4-6 or is it in ALL gears?
