Based on how its installed (Ive removed the mufflers and the switch before) and it looks factory to me.

Either thats false, it was installed by a previous owner, or vinanylytics.com (and others) are wrong.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

my 03 c4s, when i look at the build sheet, lists option XLF (sports exhaust) among others, thus i dont think it came standard on 4s models but i could be wrong
C4S stock comes with standard exhaust (non-sport). Just like any 996 though it could be ordered with the sport exhaust, plug your VIN into a vin decoder and it should tell you if you have it. It also could have been ordered at the dealer as a dealer installed option.
Here is a review of the C4S when first available; it describes many differences, but I can't recall any mention of different exhaust.

Im pretty sure PSE (Porsche Sports Exhaust) was an option any 996 variant but seems more prevalent on C4s cars. The build sheet on my car makes no reference of PSE but is equipped, so anyone shopping for a 996 should look for the nifty button on the dash vs the build sheet to confirm. And for what its worth the PSE is AWESOME.
Cars that had the Sports exhaust installed as a dealer option will not have the button on the dash. The sports exhaust mode on those cars will be constantly engaged.
Either thats false, it was installed by a previous owner, or vinanylytics.com (and others) are wrong. Its listed on no build sheet Ive pulled, and it has the button and works like every other PSE equipped 996 Ive ever been in. Based on how its installed (Ive removed the mufflers and the switch before) and it looks factory to me.
Mine has the PSE button and stock exhaust because the PO was i dip**** and took it off because
it was too loud, the mechanic bought it for 500 bucks plus his stock exhaust.
2003 factory PSE is always engaged, the button on the console, when engaged, turns off the PSE. Ive read that this is different vs other years. Mine is listed as an option as my build sheet above indicates.
i have the PSE on my car without the button (installed after took delivery). Default is open which is what you want anyway. The reason for the more muffled (i.e. via button pressed) is to conform to EU city limit sound laws.
Youre mostly right. Theres actually a diode in the PSE relay that automatically closes the butterflies (muffled sound like when the button in the dash) under speeds of 34mph (or somewhere in that mph range) the diode that does this is to conform to EU city limit sound laws. The dash mounted button is for when you wanna feel like more of a sophisticate when pulling in to the country club. Me? I disconnected the diode and never touch the dash mounted button... #becauseracecar, lol.
