Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion · Original poster
Engine was in running condition when it was taken apart.
Leading evidence: 'Run condition' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Run condition' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So I'm in the middle of rebuilding my engine and i seen that the Porsche piston rings are around 200 dollars per set. Goetze are around 37 a set. Is there a big difference is these 2 products to warrant the price gap? Do I really need to shell out 1200 dollars for piston rings?
Based on what pistons you have, this could be a challenge.
The Goetze rings have had issues with the 2nd ring being the proper design. The 2nd ring groove has a parking pin that keeps the ring from rotating. This pin has two positions it can be placed in, based on the piston. It can be in the center of the 2nd groove, or offset to the outboard edge of the groove. The end profile of the ring must match this pin location, else the ring gap will be improper, and cause big issues. The ring either has a 1/3 rounded profile at the gap (for the offset pin location) or it has a 45* bevel cut to match the center pin location.
Post a pic of your 2nd ring groove if you can.
That said, it has been years since I have seen an M9X bore that had an allowable amount of taper, and ovality to allow for only piston rings to be fitted. A round ring, in an oval hole doesn't work out too well. A fresh ring moving up and down a tapered bore also doesn't work too well. You must measure three times, before thinking that all you need are piston rings. A visual inspection only tells if you have scoring, the rest requires a bore gage.
I can post a picture when I get home. I have stock pistons unless they have different variations of stock pistons. It almost seems better to find pistons with rings because it is only a few hundred more for the set. I did see a ring stop on the piston but if i remember correctly it was on the side of the piston. I get the case halves back from the machine shop in a few days. Hopefully they are good. Engine was in running condition when it was taken apart.
Running condition doesn't matter. Cylinders can be tapered, and oval, and most are.
Yes, there are different variations of stock piston in regard to this pin location in the 2nd groove.
That's the center pin location. The proper rings for those pistons will have a 45* bevel cut at the ring gap.
Don't trust the machine shop. They ,likely have little to no experience with Lokasil.
Always do your own measurements.
Rule #1 in engine building: assume nothing.
Rule #2: quantify everything.
