If anyone on Long Island is in need of body work, I strongly recommend Venture Auto Body Services in Freeport, NY.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I was driving home from Atlantic City today on the Staten Island Expressway when a Mack Truck decided it wanted to share my exact position in space and time. I was in the right lane and he came up from the middle lane after passing the van that was behind me. He didn't see me and merged into the side of my car. His truck wheels have extended lugs that tore through my door and quarter panel and shredded a good portion of my left rear wheel. I'm guessing that it will be totaled. I am numb. This car has been great for the 8 years I've owned it. I've done tons of preventative maintenance and enhancements. The only thing that ever needed replacing during my ownership was the driver's door latch. The car has 70k miles on it and the engine runs like new. Everyone thinks it's a new car, even the tow truck operator thought it was brand new. To say that I'm bummed is a gross understatement.

So sorry to hear about this. I know exactly how you feel.
I don't think it will actually be tooooo bad, if you are interested in getting it fixed. Most of the damage is to the door. The rear quarter panel might not be too bad to replace. Replacing the door is the easiest part.
I can check with my friend to see how much he would guestimate the cost to repair it if you would like. We will obviously need more detailed pictures of the damaged areas.
PM me if it comes to that.
Good luck!
Yes, the door is toast. I'm not sure if the quarter panel can be fixed as it is chewed up pretty badly. I truly hope it can be repaired. Honestly, I don't need it to be perfect. I love driving it. The left rear wheel is definitely a goner. It it hadn't been chewed up I would have driven the car the 75 miles home, but it was way too dangerous. It's hard to tell from the photos but the wheel is very bad near the bead.
The driver's door wouldn't open, so I put the top down to make it easier to get in and out. After driving onto the flatbed, I put the top up but had to help it along the last foot or so. You can see that the rear window stayed down.
Bummer! That truck driver is a fn moron... youre lucky you werent injured or even killed. I think thats going to be a big $ repair - the insurance co. Will probably total it. Good luck with the outcome. SIE sucks!
It will probably be totaled by the insurance company, in my experience. I personally would try to buy it back and repair it, especially if the rear suspension geometry is ok.
WYO: SUM BIT! Glad you are ok. Sorry that this happened. Isn't the rear quarter part of the continuous rear and sides up to the door openings of our cars? Don't think replacement is an option, at least a reasonably priced option. I hope the situation works out to your satisfaction. My guess is the truck driver said he didn't even see you. Seems like many large/high vehicles, including jacked up pickups have trouble seeing our cars. Please keep us updated.
Glad you were not hurt Buy back and fix can be a good option, but in my experience sometimes the insurance company wants it both ways low payout high buyout.I have an 03 cab parts car,if parts are the same that might be an option for you.I also have all rear suspension components.Other on this forum have used part from this car. Regards. Mike
Wow....I am so sorry, that is all of our fear when we drive. Glad you are OK. I agree with that kind of damage it will likely be totaled. I agree with others that you should buyback the car from insurance company and you have the following options:
You buy and fix it. Assuming you want to go through the trouble or if the cost (car plus repairs) of doing that is less than 60% of the value of the car before repairs due to dimished value.
You buy it and sell it to a dismantler. Dismantlers will pay a premium typically over the buyback value so you can make a few grand more this way effectively giving you a higher settlement

can help you with both above. I get all of my parts from them and I know of other rennlisters who sold their totaled cars to them after buyback to make a few bucks. They are very fair and good guys...give them a call and see what they would pay you for it before you decide to buyback to see if it is worth it.
Good luck with all of this and hope you will be driving the car or something similar soon!
Eeeekkk! That really stinks. I can't tell you now many times I've been run off the road from the big trucks merging over into my lane. If repair is the preferred avenue, I would advise you to get the best body shop in your area to repair the door instead of replace. Why? Because the original driver side doors on the Porsche 996 has the official VIN tag on it. The replacement would NOT have one. It's not the end of the world if you choose to replace the door, but if you're trying to keep it all original, then that's the only path. The rear corner panel is going to be expensive to repair too and this is because of the double metal design used on these cars. My PDR guy won't even touch a Porsche with rear panel dings. Those Porsche BBS wheels will cost about $1000 each, maybe more since those look like the alternate 11" wide versions found on the Turbo models. Good luck!
The door is like Swiss Cheese. I doubt it can be saved. I had to pry it open in order to get my luggage out of the frunk (kind of a weird design when you think about it). The rear wheel is 11' wide, good eye. I'll see what the insurance company says and then decide from there. I have a shop that I've used a few times before for various ridiculous incidents that have happened to this car.
I know likely too soon, but if it is totaled, and it is a 3.6, I would be interested in buying it from you as a buyback for an amount over whatever the buy-back figure is.
PM if interested, and very sorry for your loss.
The quarter panel lists for lists for $2,040.90 and you can buy it for about $1,500. The door shell lists for $2,646.41 and you can buy it for about $2,040. And that is new. There are lots of these available used. Still the labor. paint, etc. is going to be $5,000 plus I would guess, maybe a lot more. So they will probably total the car. The challenge with our cars is that the prices have come down so much that they seldom want to repair them if there is much damage at all. Hell, in Illinois where I live there is some regulation that if the cost to repair is more than 25% of the value of the car it has to be given a salvage/rebuilt title.
Thanks, Doug. That is actually encouraging. My car is loaded with factory options so I'll hold out for as much as I can. I have a body shop that I've used before and they have matched my Rain forest green metallic paint perfectly in the past. They are also willing to work with you on price. I haven't even started the process yet so it will be awhile before I know what my choices are. I'll update this thread when I know more.
Good to know. I'll keep that in mind once I get all of the information. There was no impact, so there was no damage to the frame or anything but the metal skin. The truck just nudged my car but the extended wheel bolts shredded the door, some of the quarter panel, and my rear wheel.
I don't know how it works in your state but I'd recommend you mention "diminished value" to your insurance adjuster and that it be factored into the equation if they can. When your car has a dirty carfax it will be worth substantially less. My son got slammed in Georgia with his car and the diminished value amounted to almost $4,000 that would have gone unclaimed if he had not pursued it. Your state may not allow it but it's worth researching. If you are planning on keeping the car long term and don't care about ultimate resale value (meaning that the older it is the less dollars a dirty carfax will impact the value) then it won't be a major factor. Lots of things in play here, wishing you the best of success with it all and as others have said it's great no one was hurt!
Sorry for your Porsche and for you wyovino. Your cab was one of the more pristine Porsches on this forum. Great advice from Doug and others. Hopefully you'll know what to do after your insurance company gives you their feedback. Hope it all works out for you.
Oh boy. That really sucks. I have been a big fan of your car since I have the same color. I love reading your treads about what you do to your car. It is sad to see one go like this. I hope you are able to come out on top. It sucks. Someone rear ended me in my wife's CRV earlier this summer, injured my back and had me on disability for 2 months. I was so ready to go back to work. Today marks 3 months since my accident and I count my lucky stars. I am so happy to be able to drive my 911 again. I was so sad when I could only drive 'comfy' cars. Although my injury is somewhat permanent, I am happy to be functional without any residual effects. Still sad to see this happen to such a nice 911.
this exact same thing happened to my turbo back in May. I just got it back a few weeks ago. grand total was 14k on the nose. I would imagine that an insurance co would total a n/a 996.

Yes, it'll be a total loss chassis. Don't forget to tell the adjuster about the cost of the options, and upgrades you have on the car. You are supposed to be made WHOLE, including diminished later value. However, the diminished value might come back to bite you if you do buy it back from the ins to repair.
that coupe isn't the right chassis for repair a conv. Find a 1999-2000 conv chassis. It's not that hard of a job to fix. Before going too far, have the chassis measured for all the right points to insure it's not tweaked. If the chassis mics out right, go ahead and fix it. A good body man can make it look like new.
mine got front and back 1/4 panels, door, both wheels and tires and the mirror cover. I believe they will for sure total yours out. Just means now you can save up for a turbo!
All good points. Thanks. The car was hit three times while parked. The owner of the body shop not only knows me by first name but also always tells me to let her know if I decide to sell my car. She loves it. That could be an option if the buy-back price is right. I'm sure it would be cost effective for her to make it like new again. I"m not worried about the chassis as there was no real impact. Most of the damage was caused by the truck's wheel bolts.
Note that the left rear wheel was hit. Best to make sure the susp isn't bungled, but of course, no one can tell how hard the hit was and how long. Hope it gets put back on the road. No need to hide the salvage reason on this car, saves a lot of speculation when it's resold later.
I bought a salvage 928 which was hit on the right rear, next to the fuel filler. That's a steel panel, so we knocked it out, smoothed it over, put in a new filler door, and tank neck and it was good as new. But - carried the salvage title. I documented the damage, the repairs, and cost with pics, and the next guy had no problem paying a good price for it. Flood cars, and tweaked chassis are the ones that scare people. (with good reason)
It wasn't really a hit, the truck just grazed the side and chewed it up. The dent in the door is from some appendage on the side of the truck.
I'm still waiting for an inspection. I may just drive it to a local place instead of waiting for the guy to come to my house. The left rear rim is chewed up but if I take it slow there shouldn't be any problem.
The insurance inspector says the damage to my car is about $10k. I brought the car to a body shop that I've dealt with in the past and they will work out the details with the insurance company. I'm skeptical that it can be fixed for that. The inspector specified the wrong wheel part number and is off on that alone by about $400.
You may want to make sure the quote is using OEM parts. I recently talked to a body shop and they told me insurance almost never signs off on OEM parts anymore.
It is. My engine never loses a drop of oil between changes and I know its maintenance history. It will need a suspension refresh at some point but everything else is in good shape.
Wow! That is AWESOME! I was really sad to hear of your accident. I am really happy to see you back on the road. The car looks amazing with a fresh coat of paint! Please post more pics! Which color green do you have? It doesn't look very green anymore.
Thanks, I'm happy to have it back, especially after two months. It looks and drives like new - they even detailed the interior. I just have to remember never to drive it or park it anywhere ever again. I'll have a pedestal built for it so I can admire it like a trophy.
It was very close. The body shop worked with me because they didn't want it to get a salvage title. The rear wheel replacement would have put it over the top but they called in a favor to get one at a low price. I've had my car repaired there a few times before and they are great. If anyone on Long Island is in need of body work, I strongly recommend Venture Auto Body Services in Freeport, NY.
Thank you! I'm completely smitten by it as well. There are a few other dark teal cars that have checked in on the boards but I seem to be the most "vocal"
The other guy's insurance company took 100% of the responsibility, so my $500 deductible has been fully refunded and no bump to my insurance premiums. Final score: Foamy 1, Mack Truck 0.
