Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I don't think it was the battery exchange that did it...I think it needed a hard reset by having the battery disconnected for 4 days.
Leading evidence: 'Disconnect 4 days' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'battery exchange' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Disconnect 4 days' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I am going to try a few things when I get a chance, disconnect battery and plug in the Durametric.

I think mine change when I got to or just below a 1/4 tank now that I think about it.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Cannot find an answer. 99 C2 Went to a meeting last night and then returned home. It has been a tad cold for Florida the last few days. Normally my center LCD display shows MPH on the top and the outside temp below that. When I said gee...how cold is it and looked, the display had changed to "miles to fill up" with a mileage and an arrow pointing to a gas pump. Well, I don't have the fourth stalk to toggle through the display settings, so how did it change and how do I change it back?
Sounds like you had a "glitch" occur in your cluster. You will need a PIWIS or Durametric to recode the cluster, also you can go ahead in install the 4th stalk and activate the OBC while your at it..
I was hoping it would unglicth itself today because it is warmer. No such luck. I have Durametric but have never used it on the cluster. Any idea how that works for recoding the cluster? And yeah...could always add the fourth stalk so I might be looking for one of those. Are the wires or harness already there?
I'm not that familiar with the capabilities of Durametric, I have always had access to PIWIS but have heard that Durametric can do this also. Maybe someone more familiar with Durametric can guide you. Also the wiring and harness are not there for the OBC, you will have to fabricate one. There is a few DIY on this in the 986 forum, probably on the 996 forum also.
I wouldn't worry bout this too much unless you just gotta have it changed or... if the car started talking to you like HAL from 2001 Space Odyssey, then you may need to pull it's circuits. hahaha "What are you doing Joe?" " I'm afraid, I'm afraid, Joe!....
Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer do. I'm half crazy all for the love of you. It won't be a stylish marriage, I afford a carriage. But you'll look sweet upon the seat of a bicycle built for two."
Happened to mine a few months back. I figured the GF just hit something on the dash and changed it but yet I can't figure how to change it back, weird.
Weird that this is happening to others as well. How can a display mode sit exactly the same for 20 years and 145K miles, and then just suddenly change? I am going to try a few things when I get a chance, disconnect battery and plug in the Durametric. I"ll report back if anything works. I actually don't want to see how many miles to the next fill up...who cares about that!
I've had my gas level to below when the warning light comes on and the temperature display never changed. It does seem like it would be a useful feature to automatically switch to the remaining mileage screen when the tank is very low, so who knows? If the Durametric can't change it then the options are the dealer, adding a fourth stalk, or the OBC button hack.
I have the definitive answer now. My battery was getting old and not holding a charge very well. It never failed to start the car...just was getting weak. So out with my 5.5 year old Die Hard. Sent the battery tray out for sand blasting and refinishing. 4 days later, in goes new battery. Fired it up and now have my trusty outside temp display back. I don't think it was the battery exchange that did it...I think it needed a hard reset by having the battery disconnected for 4 days. Probably 30 minutes would do it.
