Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

What's everyone's thoughts on the Clutch Spring helper that I hear people talking about? Can anyone describe what it feels like to drive with it removed? Is this a super easy thing to do? I've driven manual transmissions my entire life, and the 996 clutch is definitely unique and different than others. It's not heavy, or too light, but it doesn't feel smooth at times.

POST 2Original post

Some love the feel with it removed. I did not touch mine, just left it alone. I can drive any clutch, though, and dont complain or struggle, so Im biased. If you dont like the way it feels, I would inspect and remove to see if you like the difference. Many find that the spring is broken, and report that a replacement makes a difference. As for clutch feel, these cars operate/feel the best with perfect rev match, not any clutch slippage. Often, I have to blip the throttle for upshifts from 1st to 2nd to masked this work. Otherwise, Ill get a grind on the transmission trying to shift too fast, or clutch slippage. This is most often when cold. When warm and driven more spiritedly, with revs above 3,000, its leas of an issue.

I've driven cars with manual transmissions since about 1980 and this 996 replaces a Miata as my DD so I've experienced my share of clutches. I agree with your statement " unique and different " feel of the clutch. I've had my 99 since October and the first "mod" I did was replace the spring. This thread talks about it extensively. I went with the Home Depot spring and I can now feel the clutch engagement point very clearly. Before this mod the engagement point was vague and smooth starts were difficult and I stalled the car more than any other stick I've owned. The clutch is definitely heavier now, but not by a huge amount. This also eliminated a squeak/creak in the clutch pedal that was driving me crazy. Is it difficult? Not really, other than being upside down under the dash. Taking out the ventilation tube that runs horizontally across the area definitely made the job easier. Reading through the entire (long) thread above certainly supplies plenty of good info. It seems the clutch feel on some cars is fine with the helper spring and other cars (yours, mine) not so much. I like the linear feel and the lack of squeak/creak. I don't plan on going back the the stock spring, that's for sure!

It feels awesome with it removed. That's why I started the thread referenced above over 11 years ago, lol.

POST 5Original post

It made all the difference for me to remove the helper spring. The engagement point is well defined now. Slightly more pressure to push the clutch pedal in, but not bad at all. Well worth it. Eventually I put in the extremely lightweight spring from the HD big box store to keep the pedal up at the top while not engaged. I also referenced Nick49's thread (Thank you!) and it covers everything there.
