Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

They are 5 years old and doing okay, but will need to be replaced before long.
Leading evidence: 'Replace before long' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Recommend against driving' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Ive got about 20,000 miles on them and the rears will probably need replaced within the next 5000 miles.

Suggestion
Driving below 40F is possible on summer tires, but I would strongly recommend against driving on summer tires anywhere below 30F.

But I'd like to run tires that comfortably handle temperatures down to, say 20F, without any risk of suffering damage.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I currently have Hankook V-12 Evo tires on all wheels. They are 5 years old and doing okay, but will need to be replaced before long. My only gripe is that they can be somewhat noisy on certain road surfaces.
Evo2 tires by Hankook seem to be well regarded, and the price seems okay. But one website said they are strictly summer only - it implied they could possibly be damaged if driven in sub-freezing conditions.
I drive my 996 only occasionally in winter, and only on dry roads. I don't ask it to deliver summer-type handling when cold. But I'd like to run tires that comfortably handle temperatures down to, say 20F, without any risk of suffering damage. If necessary, this would be worth giving up a little summer performance.

Sula,
Its not that youll damage tires. You get no grip on summer compounds starting at 10C/50F or below, depending on the tire. If summers get cold-soaked they will have an annoying flat spot until they warm up. That cant be good for a tire over time. All-seasons will get you through the cold, light snow and a little ice and slush quite well. You get what you pay for so look at as many reviews as you can. Your selection will vary depending on the wheel size youll run. You can get nearly the performance of summers.
Ive been happy with BFGs. They are all season as my car is a daily driver and we occasionally get temps in the 30s and sometimes lower. Ive never driven the car on the track so I cant speak to their handling at the limit. Ive got about 20,000 miles on them and the rears will probably need replaced within the next 5000 miles. Im happy with that given that it seems like 996s gobble up rear tires.

I put a set of pirelli P Zero AS+ on spare rims as my "shoulder" season tires (ie, cold but not snowy conditions). My summers are PZeros, so the AS+ are a little less quick steering, but are virtually indistinguishable from the summer tires except when pushed very hard in corners.
In my personal experience driving on a LOT of different tires on a LOT of different cars in almost every kind of weather situation, I would say that summer tires have plenty of grip (for normal driving) down to 40F and start to lose grip exponentially with each degree F colder it gets. Below 30F, summer tires have almost no grip. As far as damaging the tires goes: youll be too scared to drive for lack of grip before the tires start getting damaged. Driving below 40F is possible on summer tires, but I would strongly recommend against driving on summer tires anywhere below 30F.
Summer tires are perfectly fine for your application. I have been using tires like Bridgestone S-03 and Dunlop Star Spec tires since 2002 on my performance cars, even for winter driving.
As long as you are not driving on a track or driving aggressively (which would be foolish even on A/S tires) when the temperatures are lower, you will be PERFECTLY fine.
