Suggestion

I can see them not wanting to relinquish the programming code for brand security reasons, like in case you sell the car and have a extra key blade you could steel your own car back even if the key had been deactivated..lol It was a common practice on used CPO cars to delete any programed keys(can be up to 5) that were not in possession, so the previous owners, if they keep a key, it would no longer start the car.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hey all! Ordered a new valet key cap (or at least I think this is a valet key) anyone know how the key inserts and where the transponder pill fits into? Does the key just push into place? Also assuming that small round bit comes out to accept the pill? Thanks

POST 2Original post

Hi, Both of my keys look different than that, but they both pry apart. Inside there is a spring loaded assembly that has a block that holds the key blank in place. The little "pill" for the transponder fits in a bracket, different on each key. Here are a couple of pictures.

POST 3Original post

That is the correct valet key like mine. I believe the key only fits in one way in the plastic head so that it snaps into the key head. And yes, the little hole with the plug is where the transponder "pill" goes. Pretty simple setup. I think I would get the key cut before putting it all together.

POST 4Original post

Didn't know this existed, thanks! May pick one up for my key whose guts are broken, anyway.

POST 5Original post

What's the purpose of the valet key? Does it open the door and start the ignition only, so that a valet cannot open the glove box?

POST 6Original post

As far as I know, it does everything a regular key does, except for the remote lock/unlock. I guess it is so you don't have to give your expensive Porsche remote key to a valet. But who does that anyway? I've never and ever would let some moron 17 year old valet park my car.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks everyone! It's a great replacement if you've got a broken fob but still have the blade and pill because the electronics can't be bought separately. Figured the blade just pushed into place, don't know how to get that little round cap off though?? Does it just get pulled out and the pill gets inserted?

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 14460959

I can't get the section open to put in the transponder pill?? Any ideas apart from taking a jewellery screwdriver to it - which I don't want to do. Does the little cap slide out?

POST 9Original post

It's just a cap. Try a wooden toothpick to pry it out.

POST 10Original post

I have some tools that resemble the ones a dental hygienist uses that I would use to pull it out if it is just a friction fit cap. Some have pointy ends with hook like shapes that would work well. They were under $30 on Amazon (maybe under $20, I can't recall exactly). They come in handy in the garage.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks all, I'll give it another shot

Use a numbered drill set 61-80 also known as a jewelers drill set, with a pin vise to hold the drill (by hand). Drill a tiny hole in the cap and screw in a jewelers screw/watch screw and pull the cap out. I have seen people mangle the plastic up pretty bad digging around on it. With the drill you're only left with a tiny hole. Amazon Amazon

Thanks! So it definitely comes out? Its actually so difficult I didn't think it would be so difficult to put it open!!

POST 14Original post

Quotes source post: 14664298

Yes, the manufacture didn't think (or hoped) anyone would be replacing just the pill, so they didn't make it easy. Do you have a pill that's already programmed to the car? If not there is no need to remove it just program the one that's in there.

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 14665478

I have a spare pill from an old key to my car that was missing the internals (apart from the pill) when I bought the car. I now have two full keys and a whole bunch of key parts! I didn't realise there is a pill inside it already, I have a PIWIS but the dealership refused to give me the codes to my car

POST 16Original post

Quotes source post: 14665495

I see. Well in my opinion, and it's just my opinion, that since you own the car, and can prove it, and also own the equipment to program, if they don't want to give you the programming code, they should offer to program at no cost. So anyway yea just swap the pill and no programming is nessessary.

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 14666424

They did code my last key for me during my last service which was good of them Although if the key grey head has a pill in it I might ask them to program it for me at the next service rather than trying to open it which seems to be a near impossible task! One more question for you, my car came with two key blades which are identical apart from one of the patterns being slightly longer? Both keys work to unlock the car and lock the centre console. I can't test the glove box as my car is oddly missing the lock and in its place is a rubber grommet. Am I correct in thinking the longer pattern can lock the glove box whereas the shorter pattern can't?

POST 18Original post

Quotes source post: 14666446

If my memory serves me right, this is correct.

POST 19 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 14666597

Thanks, figured this was the case as most of the early key patters I've seen are short (no glove box!)

POST 20 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Was doing some reading and according to this site the extra cut at the top end of the key is a "generic" cut used by the ignition barrel? To do what i'm not entirely sure!? Is there some restrictions that the valet key possibly applies? http://www.locksmithmag.com/news/vag-laser-key/

POST 21Original post

Quotes source post: 14737836

The HAA is the main key, the Valet key will have NAA on it. they both use the same laser cut, but the NAA key blank has a diffferent sides on it ( if I remember right the side is not cut back as high) and will not go all the way in on the glove box.

POST 22 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 14737948

Interesting, I think all my keys have HAA on them so maybe my valet key was lost or possibly didn't come with a RoW car. Just on the glove box lock on mine it only uses the first 3 numbers of the key and is somewhat shallow to insert because it doesn't even reach the extra cut. I'll post a pic tonight This is all for my missing glove box lock, good news is that a few car locksmiths I've called have the HU66 wafers so they can recode the used glove box barrel I have l. A new barrel is $600+ :s

Are there any instructions on how to replace the crest on the key fob? Assuming its just stuck on there, any tips on getting it off and the new one on?
