Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

What gear oil was used on the oil change - lots of opinions on that here, some people say only the factory fluid is ideal.

When stopped and in traffic, temps can creep up unless the front fans come on (theres two settings on front can, low and high, and if you press the AC button, the front fans will run continuously on low).

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Figured I'd join Rennlist to say thanks for all the great info as I was looking to buy my first Porsche. Success!
A few observations and questions so far:
1. This thing is a blast to drive!
2. Florida car, 47k miles, garaged, and now this? Outside, in a condo parking lot, in the snow? It doesn't make economic sense, and maybe some consider it disrespectful. However: see point 1 above. I love driving it.
3. Gearbox oil has just been changed, but shifting through the gears isn't as smooth as I'd expect. Sure, cold oil is more viscous, so if it's -10F or whatever you'll notice it. But in addition, it feels like there is resistance when slotting into position, no matter the revs. I haven't driven any other 996s so I don't have a good reference point. My NA Miata with many more miles shifts much more smoothly.
4. I'm tall. My legs touch the steering wheel even when it's positioned all the way out. I've read suggestions to use a "dish" shaped steering wheel which sounds great, except I'd like to keep the airbag since this is my DD.
5. My feet can get caught on whatever piece of trim is positioned above the pedals. Especially when wearing (ahem) snow boots. Any way to make some more room down there?
6. It sounds like there is an engine fan that always comes on when starting the car, which turns off after a few minutes. Why bring cold air in when the engine isn't hot?
Looking forward to many more miles & getting to know some of you!
Congrats on your 911 ownership and welcome to the forums. I can't answer all your questions, but I can get you started.
The fan noise you hear on startup is the secondary air injection pump, part of emissions.
The shifting feel won't be as good as your miata- these 911s have cable shifters which aren't as direct feeling as rod or mechanical linkages.
Glad to see you driving it in the cold. Judging by the forums you have between 1 cold start and 10 years of cold starts before you suffer from bore scoring and the associated heartache.
Welcome and congrats!
What state are you in? I just got a set of snows on factory 996 rims with a car I purchased, if you have any interest, drop me a message. I'm in Vermont. And I don't plan to ever drive my 996 in the snow if I can avoid it.
I believe you can buy a spacer from Carnewal to move the steering wheel out. They aren't inexpensive though -

What gear oil was used on the oil change - lots of opinions on that here, some people say only the factory fluid is ideal.
There are fans at the front (radiators) and rear (engine lid). I don't think either of them come on automatically when I start either of my 996 C2 cars, but I couldn't swear to it.
Bravo for you! The sound of a fan you hear on start up is definitely the SAI (secondary air injection) pump running. It is emissions related...pumps air into the exhaust system until the cats are warm. If you look up under the pedals overhead there is a plastic piece that directs air to your feet. It just pulls out to the side and may give you the room you need for your boots. Stow it in the garage until spring.
+1(2-3)? On the SAI pump.
I have one of the steering wheel extenders. It works well for me. Having a larger space between the wheel and stalks does take some getting used to. On the plus side you will never accidentally turn the wipers on while on the track.
Awesome! My 99 had 48k miles on it and never saw snow, but that sure didnt stop me last weekend when we collected 12 of snow over 3 days in Chicagoland.
Re: Shifting: My car shifts a little stiff when cold, and especially into forst gear when cold if Im moving at all. But for mine, its only when cold, and only 1st gear. Ive read that the first two gears are doublesynchro. I will replace my trans/diff fluid with OEM Porsche fluid (
https://www.pelicanparts.com/More_In...043-305-49-OEM
), but I dont expect different results. Youll read on here LOTS of people have this issue when cold on these cars. Problem is, LOTS dont, do we dont know whats supposed to be the right real answer. Since Ive had 3 Porsches, and they all did this, I am OK with it.
My other advice is to keep an eye on engine coolant temperature. When cold and moving, youll likely not have issues. When stopped and in traffic, temps can creep up unless the front fans come on (theres two settings on front can, low and high, and if you press the AC button, the front fans will run continuously on low). But on my car, the fans only come on when engine coolant temps are 105-107C, which is a bit too warm for my tastes, so I leave the AC button depressed any time I see temps go past 103C.

Welcome to Rennlist with your new to you C2. Nice to see another owner driving in the snow, great fun. Common to have a reluctant gearbox when it's cold out. Goes away after just a few minutes of driving and shifts as it should. Enjoy your Porsche!
Congrats, nice car! We are neighbors! Enjoy and don’t avoid Nashua Porsche if you have questions or issues about the car and reasonable for maintenance. No, I do not work there, they are good people!
I use mine in the winter as a daily driver too. I put Yokohama Ice Guard tires on 17" wheels and it does great in the snow. This is in the mountains of SW CO. You will enjoy yours, I'm sure. Congrats! PS: takes a while for the trans to warm up enough for quick shifts.
