Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Given the right tools and reasonable care, it can be (& frequently has been) installed by amateurs - with good results.
Leading evidence: 'Install by amateurs' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check th ride height' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. would benifit, as well as the consumer, if they rented the tools necessary to replace the bearings they offer.

If not maybe this bearing was replaced since engine was installed.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have removed the IMS bearing and it looks brand new. I don't have any history that came with the '99' C2
except that this is a remanufactured engine with Approx. 78,000 miles. Was wondering what bearing the factory
would have used in 2004 when this engine was replaced. The bearing is an NSK made in Poland single row.
Does that sound accurate for this year engine?
If not maybe this bearing was replaced since engine was installed.
Not super important as I will upgrade the bearing regardless.
Was also wondering if all RMS replacements being offered are the latest upgraded ones.
Thanks as always for any reply...
There are threads here on Rennlist that say that the 1st generation (99-01) 996's all came with dual row bearings IMS from the factory and for the 2nd gen they went to Single row (bummer).
Seems like that one that you removed was a replacement.
I'm sure others will chime in shortly as well.
Porsche replaces engines w/ the latest they have to offer. So if your engine was replaced in 2004, it would have the later, single row bearing, not the earlier dual row bearing your car came with originally.
As for replacements, both a single bearing "retrofit" and an oil-fed "solution" are available from L&N Engineering. The Solution is an extra $1k for parts along w/ the task of finding an authorized installer.
Thanks to everyone for thier replys to my convaluted question.
Still wondering abut the RMS. Most retailers will probably have the latest offering over what was
installed at the factory. Think I read that somewhere...
Would like to use the L&N products, but they are too dear in price and the warranty won't be realized as
I plan on installing my own bearing.
I will buy another bearing that will hopefully last as long as this one has and cost quite a bit less than what
L&N engineering wants. Hard to fathom that a 2 inch bearing can cost $800.00. I think that the bearing suppliers
would benifit, as well as the consumer, if they rented the tools necessary to replace the bearings they offer.
Correct - we offer free tool rental for IMS Solution installs (including rental of the rear main seal tool) when you purchase your IMS Solution through us.
Anyone can install an IMS Solution, even a DIY user. Just follow the pre-qual procedures and instructions to the T. You won't have any issues.
I appreciate everyones input regarding my IMS bearing replacement. Good to know that there is tool rental through the Rennlist.
I went to the L&N website and dicovered that they do rent tools for the install of the solution bearing assembly, but I don't think
that extends to thier retrofit version.
Thanks to Charles and all his company's support towards the Porsche community. I'm in the process of installing thier spin on
oil filter upgrade and magnetic drain plug. just won't be using thier other products at this point in time.
Not to hyjack this thread, but does the Rennlist community rent a spring compressor for the shock/struts on a 996 Porsche?
My shocks are shot and don't know if the springs are too. Should have checked th ride height before lifting car off the floor.
Anyone have insight as to an eighteen old 996 suspension?
Thanks everyone...
Strut spring compresser can be bought at Harbor Freight for 34 dollars, it works great, did my car 04 C2 two weeks ago and did my step-son 02 C2 today. great tool with safety pins so it will not come apart on you.
