Clean and polish them to perfection (at least the portions that will be visible), apply the shields (or have them installed professionally, but it's easy to do), and then use silicone.

I've used the tape method, but it's still a little thick IMO.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So I got the headlight covers from Andrew, I'm just not sure how to attach them as some have used 3M tape, others RTV Silicone, and others permatex gasket maker... Also should I remove the headlight assembly to apply the covers?....any advise would be greatly appreciated

POST 2Original post

I can tell you what not to do. The 1999 996 I bought had headlight covers on that didn't look bad while I was looking at the car (not a deal breaker). Once I got the car home and started looking closer, I realized I wanted to remove them and either put them on better (i.e correctly) or remove them for good. Once I started taking them off, I found, 3m tape, black double-sided tape and a bunch of superglue. So I've been picking off stuck adhesive and superglue for a month now. I'm to the point where I'm re-finishing my headlights, sanding and polishing just to get them looking "normal." So when you put them on, don't do that.

I used silicone. Seems to work fine. I removed the headlamp to avoid celaning up excess silicone on my paint. The cover fit perfectly. You can see from my picture on how good of quality and fit the cover is (even line throughout).

POST 4Original post

That looks so good. I hope Andrew is making progress with the MK-I version.

POST 5Original post

I used 3M .030 x 1/4" tape see link below. The .030 is about as thin as setting it in sealant and I found that even though the covers have a great fit, they do require that you have adequate force down to form to the headlight. Just using tape to hold the cover down while the sealant sets is difficult at best. Used a row around the headlight cut-out and a row around the perimeter leaving a 1/4" gap at lowest point so any moisture could weep out. Been installed for a few months now and seems to be holding strong. Plus if you decide to remove for any reason, sealant may be difficult. (JMO) https://www.findtape.com/3M-Scotch-0...ent-Tape/p575/

POST 6Original post

I've used the tape method, but it's still a little thick IMO. I had to remove one because it was a little crooked and I couldn't leave it. I reapplied with silicone and achieved a much better fit. His design is done pretty precisely regarding fit, and the silicone doesn't interfere, yet holds them firmly. Now, key IMO, is to apply clear headlight protectors first. Clean and polish them to perfection (at least the portions that will be visible), apply the shields (or have them installed professionally, but it's easy to do), and then use silicone. I leave the lights in the car, just because I want to be sure the covers align correctly. Painters tape keeps enough pressure until the silicone sets. They're not coming off, unless you really want them to. Like I said, I had to remove one, but with a little heat and some patience it came off. Headlight protector peeled off in one piece. I cleaned up the residual glue, applied a new protector, silicon and cover. Any silicone that seeps out can be easily peeled off once it's set. A plastic razor blade is helpful. Taking out the headlight at this point can be helpful, but usually not necessary.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
