I would then offer a check of the actual oil pressure from cold start to warm idle would be called for but I am concerned that the oil level might be low or the wrong oil has been used.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

01 Boxster S, 34,000 miles. Temp gauge creeps up during traffic stops after the car has been driven for a while. And then oil light goes on. If I rev the car a bit it goes off. Oil light goes off when driving. Concerned about temp rising and of course oil light. My mechanic (not dealer but fixes german cars) is perplexed. Any help would be appreciated!

POST 2Original post

Clean between radiators - Search- easy diy Check w/p -consider replacement with LTT+ new w/p Upgraded oil pump pressure relief piston+spring - easy diy Oil+filter change? May not fix it but all good maintenance to eliminate from the keyboard diagnostic debate Ask here for an M96 mechanic in your area. The "I fix German Cars" guy is probably not qualified ! BTW you are in 996, not 986 Section

POST 3Original post

Not familiar with Boxsters but do they have the computer that tells you why a light/alarm has sounded like the 996? If they do it would be interesting to know what it said. Plus what does the pressure gauge show for bars?

POST 4Original post

The oil is either too light in viscosity, or is getting too hot- or both. Or you have an open clearance within the engine leading to a less resistance to flow for the oil, and therefore less pressure. Low oil pressure at idle is usually due to several compound contributing factors.

First thing is find a good tech. I would then offer a check of the actual oil pressure from cold start to warm idle would be called for but I am concerned that the oil level might be low or the wrong oil has been used. I'd want to have some confidence the oil level was right and the engine has a suitable oil in it. You need a good tech to work through this to get it sorted.
