Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

What made it extra fun is that the AOS I was replacing only had 1400 miles on it.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi All,
I just had the fun joy of replacing my AOS. What made it extra fun is that the AOS I was replacing only had 1400 miles on it. When I installed that one, the engine was out of the car, so it was a 10 minute job.
With the engine in the car, it is a lot more involved. Pelican has a great write-up, so I will not do a full DIY, just sharing some tips.
1. Get the rear of the car up as high as possible.
2. When removing the coolant tank, remove it from the black bracket, then remove the bracket. This frees up more space to pull the tank out.
3. Unhook the fuel lines (17mm & 19mm) form the fuel rail, otherwise the tank will get caught on them on the way out. You can also remove the level sensor if needed (just twist).
4. Make sure you have the radiator clamp pliers. They are cheap and make the job a ton easier since you are disconnection a ton of them.
5. The first five manifold bolts are easy. Depending on your year, they are either internal torx or 10mm. My engine is a reman from 2005 so it was external torx.
6. The 6th bolt closest to the AOS is a pain. What makes it a ton easier is to unmount the AOS. This creates enough clearance to slip an extension and socket back there. No need to use a swivel. MAKE SURE TO PLUG THE HOLE (with a rag) WHERE THE BILLOWS FROM THE AOS CONNECTS TO THE MOTOR. Otherwise you could drop something down there.

When I owned my Audi's pelican's write ups saved my butt. I've been wrenching my entire life but German engineering is it's own special challenge. Thanks everyone. I have a feeling I need to check my AOS.
