The foam surrounds they use now also seem to help keep them wedged in place - I think I'd freak out being that confined, but not dying is probably worth some discomfort.

It's too easy to make the mistake she made, especially if there were no cars using the off-ramp when she would have been entering it mistakenly.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

This is horrible and shameful for a 40 year old man to jeopardize the life of a 13 year old child.
Just read a more up-to-date report on this and fortunately, both sustained non-life threatening injuries. The child had a seat belt on, but the man was ejected and probably did not. The airbags did not deploy. This may be because the car had a salvage title and was not restored properly (authorities state). The driver is also under suspicion of heavy drinking in addition to the wild driving which means once he recovers, the law will drop the hammer on this man for DUI, driving recklessly, and child endangerment.
Well, in my opinion, the only thing that kept the cabin from being crushed and killing both of them instantly was the roll cage that he installed. And the fact, that she buckled the 5-point harness helped save her life too. Thankfully she had more brains than he did regarding the seat belts. If you look at the other side, you'll see that the driver's side 5-point harness was not damaged which probably mean the moron was probably too drunk to care to buckle up which is why he was thrown from the vehicle.
That's why I continue to say that if I have to be in an accident like that, I want to be in the 996. I've seen numerous images like that leave you wondering how anyone walked away from it. Porsche knows how to protect the occupants even when they are acting like asshats.
Flying suspension with wheels still attached... That's a sh!tload of force
One witness mentioned he saw him cutting donuts at an intersection and drifting the car. Lawdy. Just happy the 13 year old will live through this mess.
This is not the first 996 crash photo where I'm left in awe of the beefiness of the A pillars in our cars. Wow.
When you look at the sills, it starts to become clear just how much reinforcement there is around the passengers.
Good point Chanel#5. The whole car is warped, but the A pillars are still in almost perfect form. Wow... what metal are they made of? solid boron steel?
Very lucky guy there.
Car took a massive hit to the driver's side rear quarter, looks like a tree or a pole. If that hit came one or two feet forward, driver would be a goner for sure.
Luckily neither hit their heads on the rollbar or they probably would have suffered fatal brain injury. Unless you have a helmet on, the rollbar is a dangerous addition to a street car.
Another even more strange accident riversidecountynewssource.org/2016/05/02/5-month-old-ejected-in-hwy-74-crash-suffered-fatal-injuries-2-adults-hospitalized/
That is another gut-wrenching, horrible story where adults don't have the brains or respect for a helpless little life to at least put the baby in a properly reversed child seat and harnessed to a car with rear seats. Apparently, this Porsche had the rear seats removed, which is more proof of their negligence by driving without having the infant properly secure. God help us.
Actually they are reinforced with high strength boron steel. Don't know if they are solid boron steel, but super frickin strong!
I read somewhere you could turn the car over and drop it from 5 feet and the windshield frame would not collapse. Same structure in the Boxster
Jeez. What the hell is it with stupid parents driving Porsches in CA???
I have a feeling they won't be so happy with Porsche's structural engineering in this case. That's certainly a situation I would prefer not to survive...
I want to feel superior and judgmental towards them, but no matter how stupid they were I can't help but feel bad for them to have lost their kid in such a manner. I'm sure they will be beating themselves up for a very long time
Not something I would wish on anyone.
I drive that road anytime I am headed to Palm Desert/Springs or headed to Chuckwalla
It is a really fun twisty road, parts like the Amalfi coast. From the article is sounds like they went over the edge at the vista point. I wonder if he just drove over the edge?
Alright guys, no more arguments on replica GT3 ebay seats. They can survive an accident like this.
As for the paint, the guy def did a COMPLETE job on it as it seems. Looks like the Lamborghini Reventon color to me.
You didn't!
In other news....Drove by this one a couple of weeks ago on the way to lunch. Doctor in a yellow Carrera took the off ramp instead of the on ramp then tried to make a U-Turn on the highway. The entrance and exit are right next to each other so it's not as stupid as you would think. OK, the U turn was but you hate to see a life and a porsche end over such a silly mistake.

Not that long ago, a guy in a Boxster decided to blast past the person in front of him, lost control, and jumped the guard rail on the right side of the road about a mile from my office. Unfortunately, this took place on the transition ramp from one freeway to another; the Boxster landed top-down onto the road below. The drop from that overpass to the roadway is about 50 feet, so at least it was painless.
Needless to say, I make a point of not blasting around people on that ramp.

Just looked at Google Maps at that on-ramp entrance/off-ramp exit:
https://www.google.com/maps/@35.5945...!7i3328!8i1664
It's too easy to make the mistake she made, especially if there were no cars using the off-ramp when she would have been entering it mistakenly. Definitely should be better marked - I could absolutely see my wife making that mistake.
I looked at it and had to scan for the little yellow signs in the median and the ground to find anything. And this is me being stationary and on google maps. By the time you make the turn, it's already too late. I did see a wrong way sign but it is pointed straight and not at both angles of oncoming traffic that would enter it. I could definitely see people missing it.
There is a garage in Bank of American building in downtown Phoenix. For four years of drinking in downtown I always couldn't figure out how to get out from the bottom floors since "out ramps" are kind of narrow and I always missed them. So I ended up blasting it up the "in" ramps and had passengers drag cones around so I can squeeze to the "pay booth". On V-day this year I finally figured where the "out ramps" are....
Muffler bypass pipes installed.
Also in one of the passenger side pictures you can see what looks to be a 15" subwoofer that came unglued... luck that didn't hit anyone in the back of the head.
If the car in the Riverside wreck had a full cage, the driver's head would have slammed into the top tube between the A and B pillars while his left left wrapped around the lower tube. Steel tubing is very unforgiving; it's best to be harnessed in and wearing a helmet like Architect and Johnny Irish pointed out...
If you're properly restrained, a cage keeps you safe while the rest of the car gets torn apart to dissipate the energy of the crash. If you're not properly restrained, a roll cage just provides something VERY hard for you to slam into. One of the reasons that the wrecks in "Red Asphalt" and the other Driver's Ed videos were so gory was that the cars of that era were built like tanks; the occupants were unrestrained (or maybe had a lap belt) and the dashes were steel. Ow.
If you didn't see the Alonso crash in the 2016 F1 race, it's worth checking out - Alonso's car was completely shredded, but since he was strapped into the safety capsule, he walked away...
I'm pretty sure he's thinking "holy sh*t, I just climbed out of THAT..."
That is really the best but for those that do track, using something like this around the bars is better than nothing.

The foam surrounds they use now also seem to help keep them wedged in place - I think I'd freak out being that confined, but not dying is probably worth some discomfort.
I wonder how many injuries HANS has prevented in F1...Vettel's wall hit in the Russian GP would have given most of us whiplash...
All the crash protection is fine and very good at protecting you in a sport like F1. More importantly IMO is how the each indivdual is able to react to high G levels at various angles during these types of high speed impact. I don't know too many people or studies that have yet conclusively mapped out high G levels on various humans and their effects. We're talking over 46g's. I gotta wonder if Fernando had is eyes closed even for a brief moment at the time of impact. Imagine forward collison with your eyes open at 46g's...
With his luck, he needs to play his home country's and one of the highest paying, El Gordo Lotto.
...or your teeth are apart - or your teeth are apart and your tongue is in between them. Some people die from torn aortas. That would suck...an instant of "Holy sh*t! I lived!" followed by the rapid bleed out into your chest cavity.
Yeah I guess it is still unclear on if everyone can survive a 46g hit regardless if your body parts seem like they are intact or not. I can imagine the brain being squeezed against your skull like that can't be too healthy either...
If Fernando ever commits suicide in the future, I'll contribute it to this one event.
No padding that exists that fits inside the car will protect your head from a roll bar. There just isn't enough time and distance to slow down the impact with the bar.
Ok, I want to follow up on this OP's story. I just spoke with the teacher that knows the family and teaches the child's (in the accident) sibling. Good news!... Both the 40 year old driver AND the 14 year old survived. They had many injuries (of course), but after a lengthy recovery, they are now doing well. But the 40 year old is in serious trouble because he was clearly drunk while driving the Porsche recklessly with the child. Here's the deal in the nutshell, the child's parents were recently divorced and the person driving the Porsche was the *new* boyfriend. The father of the child is pressing charges and from what I gather, the whole town is wanting something done about the person because he has been known for irresponsible driving habits in his Porsche. Fortunately, he lived through this one in spite of being throw from the vehicle and I'm sure, he has much to think about and make right. Personally, if I was the daddy of that little girl, as soon as that man got out of the hospital, I'd open up a can of whoop-*** and put right back in. Regardless, I'm happy they both survived, especially the 14 year old girl.
I was just about to post the same thing! Wow even Google's truck caught it so it's gotta be happening quite often - just not as catastrophic as the incident with the Porsche.
...and then spend a few years in jail for assault? Nope, this isn't whoop-*** time...this is find-somewhere-alone-with-that-guy-and-threaten-the-f**k-out-of-him. The kind of conversation where you make it very clear that you don't mind going down for murder if it's done to protect your little girl.
Girls are at an order of magnitude greater risk of sexual abuse when her parents divorce. When the girl is living in the mother's home with another man present - the mom's boyfriend or even the ex-husband, girls are at even GREATER risk of sexual abuse. '...girls "were more than [seven] times more likely to be abused"" than children living only with females'. That's a 700% difference, 7 times more likely that a daughter will be sexually abused if her single mother has a man in the house. (Cornell Law Review, Volume 86, Issue 2 January 2001, article 1).
That the girl is in a home with the mother and a non-family-member male isn't a great situation; that the male in question is acting like a teenage boy trying to impress a girl he likes is even more worrisome.
I hope the mother keeps a close eye on this and has a very open relationship with the kid. Her life is much more likely to get screwed up; I wouldn't want that on my conscience if I was the mother OR the father in this situation. Dad needs to be around and participating in her life, not in jail for assault or slapped with a restraining order that prevents him from contacting the child.
Thanks Man! I'm a father of two young ladies and nothing boils my blood worse than when someone hurts one of my girls. Regardless if it was an accident or not, that kind of reckless behavior that nut exemplified in the Porsche was unbelievably stupid and selfish, and if that was my girl in that car, it would have pushed buttons in me that would unleash a scary type of crazy on that man. To quote Pulp Fiction, "I'd go medieval on his ***!"
Unfortunately, the teacher of the child couldn't give me much more information on the situation since things are now in the hands of the court system, but it's my opinion, that the father is ready to make this guy burn if you get my drift. I'll probably touch base with her in a few month, but I didn't want her to think I was being creepy or intrusive.
Either way (whether the guy is trying to hit on his daughter or just trying to kill her), the urge to beat him into a bloody pulp would definitely be hard to control...
