Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Any one of you guys had to change a knock sensor on the 996 with the engine in the car?
Leading evidence: 'Replace knock sensor' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace knock sensor' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Any one of you guys had to change a knock sensor on the 996 with the engine in the car? I have a FAULTY #2 sensor that I need to change out. The only vids I see on You Tube are for different cars, not 996. I would be grateful for any help on this matter. Thanks. ASHIA HELP.
Hi Hurdi, it will be a pita as the sensor is bolted on the engine block deep behind the a/c compressor and below the right intake manifold. I would expect you have to remove at least the T plenum and go from there. Worst case is unbolt the a/c compressor and remove the right intake manifold to get there.
****... Thanks Ahsai.. what is or can you show me a photo of a T plenum. When you say the A/C compressor do you mean the Alternator? I believe that the alternator is a P I T A to remove.
You can see the bank 2 black knock sensor bolted on the right half engine case, between where the a/c compressor and the coolant/oil heat exchange are mounted.
The T plenum is the black round T shape plastic pipe that's attached to and right behind the throttle body. By a/c compressor, I did mean the a/c compressor....on the right side of the engine if you stand at the rear looking at the engine.
I will let Porsche do the job for me as this is way to advanced for me to attempt the DIY. Or get a quote from Porsche and from a couple on indies in our area.
I would go indie it's not particularly specialised job and it's not really technical it's just fiddly because of space to get in to work ! Also AC will need a re gas obviously
Are you 100% sure it's the sensor and the wiring?
If you pull the alternator, there should be enough room to easily get to he driver side sensor and with some luck, could get to the other one too. After all, they are only held on by a single bolt so removal is very easy.....once you get a socket on it.
I am working in this area on an M96 -on the bench now.
If the P.O. means the knock sensor beneath the a/c compressor - that is easier to get to ,once the compressor+inlet manifold is unbolted and levitated.
The knock sensor beneath the alternator is more cramped because of the oil filler tube,X valve and wiring harness.
In situ , both sensors would be very tedious to r&r for a noob, or anyone with large hands.I am sure there are some tricks to doing the job but I do not know them.
Call your Indie- my 2c !
OK I have got an Indi to do the job for me. Well at least he gave me a ball park quote which I thought very reasonable. I told him that the knock sensor was deep under the intake manifold. Now I would like to tell him which side of the engine the #2 sensor is situated. Is it the right as I stand looking at the engine from the rear? Do you guys know?
Your well qualified Indie does not know which is Bank 1 or Bank 2 ? Or is it just your posh accent:-)
