Reported cause

The important issue is the notches in the camshafts to be in the correct "allocation" after the solenoid has been installed.

I'm working on bank 1-3 and did in fact check the engine was at TDC for #1 and popped-off the rear camshaft plug to make sure the line has horizontal and open end facing the valve cover.

Now my main concern is what I found when I removed the camshafts to access the solenoid / actuator to replace the pads.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello all, This is a a follow-up to my other post regarding changing the brake pads / chain tensioner pads on my 2000 996 5 chain engine. This is of course with the engine still installed. So far banks 1-3 have been a breeze with the engine installed.(4-6 is a whole other story just because of trying to get to the tension er screw under the compressor). Now my main concern is what I found when I removed the camshafts to access the solenoid / actuator to replace the pads. According to the 101 Projects manual and FSM, the camshaft divots should be in line with the colored chain link . Better said colored (gray) link should be synced with the divot of each camshaft sprocket. I'm working on bank 1-3 and did in fact check the engine was at TDC for #1 and popped-off the rear camshaft plug to make sure the line has horizontal and open end facing the valve cover. Prior to this the car was running fine and all this started because I got a reading on the durametric of camshaft deviation of 10.92 on 1 and 2.92 on the other. So my main concern is whether the chain may have jumped and whether I need to "re-time" the camshafts. I'm attaching a photo for reference. Thanks!

POST 2Original post

The easiest is to remove the chain and reaseemble the cams from scratch with the correct positions aligned (indicated by the dots). Note even with everything correctly assembled, if you rotate the cams afterwards with the chain on, those marked chain segments and the divots on the cams will immediately get out of sync. I'm sure if you keep rotating the cams, at some point they will line up again. Currently in your case, it's inconclusive unless you keep rotating both cams and found all the marks line up again at some point.

POST 3Original post

I rebuilt my M96. My (foolish?) understanding was that the colored link was just an aid for inept mechanics like me. The important issue is the notches in the camshafts to be in the correct "allocation" after the solenoid has been installed. You can confirm that by observing the notches (which you have done)and counting the # of links between the sprocket marks. Insite and Logray have wonderful Posts on camshaft allocation and timing with lots of photos, You need someone to give you those links. DO NOT guess ! https://www.youtube.com/profile?user...6s&view=videos

Thanks guys. Both points make much sense and Schnell, that makes total sense. Thanks!
