Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My 40th AE had Bilstein PSS 9s installed when I recently purchased the car. After a couple trips totaling about 3k miles, I felt the front end "floated" more than I liked, and the car felt more "vague" than I prefer. To clarify, my preference for ride and handling has always been toward track performance levels rather than what others might consider "comfort". I had been thinking that heavier rate springs were needed to have the car meet my expectations for a crisper feel. However I thought I'd try adjusting the shocks first. I found the adjusters a little difficult to accurately discern the clicks etc. so I simply went full firm on all four corners. The car's input response is now far better and much closer to the feel I personally prefer. I was surprised it made quite so much difference in the crispness of the handling, without making the car's ride simply harsh. The floating is essentially gone, body roll pretty much non existent (there wasn't much roll to start with as the 40th AE has stiffer bars) and the car is not harsh over normal roads. I originally had no intention of leaving the car at full firm, but so far I have not experienced any negative effects that would warrant immediately dialing it back a bit, and the improvements have been huge. I will still consider slightly heavier rate springs and bars, but I'm probably going to take some time to further evaluate this adjustment. I would imagine a slight spring and bar rate increase, and dial back on the shocks a click or two might be a reasonable future end point. Just thought I'd share.

POST 2Original post

Every experience I've had with PSS9 I felt only two settings. It was either floaty and vague as you described or really harsh. I'm surprised you went firm and didn't find it harsh. Maybe they've changed the valving. I've only driven a 997 and 993 with them and the shocks were pretty new but both were 3-4 years ago.
