The aero kit on this car is not original, but it is as close as I could come to checking all the boxes.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

24 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So after 15+ years of air cooled 911 ownership and then a couple with a 986 I finally found the new 911 I had been searching for. Fellow Rennlist member had this listed down in Texas for sale and I struck a deal with him. He was even nice enough to deliver it half way across the country to me. Lots of little things to sort out on it still, but the major stuff of clutch and IMS are already done. I havent really driven it much yet as I was waiting for the tirerack.com to sort out some mistakes on the new wheels and tires. I have been on the hunt for a GR or SY aero car with sport seats, LSD and 030. The aero kit on this car is not original, but it is as close as I could come to checking all the boxes.

POST 2Original post

Welcome and nice cars. Now get out there and drive them

POST 3Original post

Sweet! So where are you in this great state? Maybe we'll meet up I'm in the San Antonio area. The Porsche clubs here in Texas are amazing you should join one!

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The car was in Texas and it was delivered to me up in the Milwaukee area. Owner was going up to the EAA fly in. So sorry not down in Texas anymore.

POST 5Original post

Awesome - we have a similar background on Porsche experience. My first was an 88 Targa, then an 00 Boxster S, and now a 99 996. What air cooled car did you have? Ive had to re-learn how to drive these cars because I was always taught to brake in a straight line. But the 996 loves trailbraking (on the track).

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I had a 71 Targa outlaw that I restored from just a bare shell and a 77 with a Carrera 3.2 in it. Both were great cars, but I really wanted something with more modern amenities. You know like AC, wipers that clear the windshield, headlights that illuminate the road and a radio that sounds OK. My Boxster is a wonderful car, but I live in the midwest where the weather is not always agreeable and my top down days are few and far between. Also I have a 5 year old and the back seat is nice once in a while to cart her around in. As for driving I actually prefer the Boxster to the 911. It feels lighter and more nimble, but is down a little on power. This 996 definitely feels more stable than my 71/77 for sure. Brakes are a heck of a lot better too. I need to get some solid hours behind the wheel before I pass total judgements.

POST 7Original post

If my car had the coreect areo kit we would have twins. nice ride

POST 8Original post

Nice ride man! Welcome back to the water world.

POST 9Original post

Love it! Good job on the wheel selection and color.

POST 10Original post

We are close to twins! Congrats on the great car!

POST 11Original post

Gen 2 looks great with the Taco ...put the rear diffuser tabs on the Gen 2 rear bumper and it will look Aero all the way...Congrats

Thats why I chose a Boxster S: a lot more power and 911 brakes. But I have kids now too, so the 911 accommodates perfectly.

POST 14Original post

Looks really nice! But then again, I like Tacos!

Don't apologize, just come home! You can drive your car year-round here...

Y’all foreigners gotta quit coming down here to The Republic of Texas and taking our best cars. Now bring it back...please.

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Figured I would post a couple more photos for grins. I have some paint correction work to do on the outside and a couple of dings to get out, but I think I am done on the exterior. Now I have to figure out what to do on the inside of it. I am not a huge fan of the all tan interior so I need to strategically place some black accents to tone it down a bit. I have seen it done on other 996 interiors where it looks pretty good. Thanks for all the compliments so far. I put some miles on it yesterday and I think I am falling in love.

Great looking car and welcome to the wet side! Your color combo is what I really wanted but oh well, c'est la vie . I too, am a air-cooled refugee having made the leap to water cooled last year. I have no regrets so far. My car's interior was a sea of gray when I bought it and I had the same idea as you. I've been gradually adding black bits to break it up a little. You can see what I've done so far in this thread.

POST 20 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

M3 found a new home and the new owner pics it up tomorrow actually. I really liked your car, but this one popped up down in Texas (Docmirror's car) and it had the sport seats and LSD, so I jumped on it. Did you find a home for your blue one yet?

POST 21Original post

yep; it lives in TX now. looks like you found a nice car. congrats!

POST 22Original post

Just amazing! Beautiful car. I really love the early red aero 996 cars. That's why I chose it for my avatar. I've been to some Porsche shows and the 996 cars are lined up next to the aircooled Porsches. Everyone getting a long and laughing. But funny thing, if I based my opinions on the forums, it would seem like things were so a little more nasty. I've been lurking for years, but still new to this Porsche world.

POST 23Original post

So now that youve had the 996 for awhile, how does it compare to all the other Porsches youve had? BTW, nice running into you today at a work event - small world.

Wow did you look at this thread Mike? You were one of the first to respond. Meeting you last night was great, we will have to hit some local events together. Having this car for a year has been fun and a lot of work. I have rebushed almost all of the front suspension and parts of the rear. Still need to do strut bearings on all 4 corners. Added a catted X-pipe and PSE modded mufflers, but still not entirely happy with the sound. Could use a little more. Cleaned up the interior a lot and polished up the paint. It is coming along and I pretty sure I am going to keep it for a while. Only thing that will kick it out of my garage will be a GT4 at some point.
