Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Replace oil' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check next time i drive it and report back' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. Suggestion
I would also check the oil pressure relief springs and valve.

In parallel, I would follow the advice to find the source of the tick before replacing any parts.

Said he would change the oil and see if it goes away.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Parked the 911 to run into a convenience store and noticed an audible tapping sound, see video. Slightest throttle blip and it goes away.

I had it towed home and will not drive it til I can figure out what it is. The car sat for two weeks while I was out of town and it is a good weather only car anyway and not a daily driver. The noise definitely wasn't there previously nor when I bought it
Bad hydraulic tappet? Scored cylinder? Can't hear it with the engine lid open.
Thanks.
Hope it is noting serious, but if I call a tow truck eveyrtime my Porsche, or one of our other cars, or one of the two work trucks we have, or one of the three motorcycle we have made a tapping sound, well hell I might as well just buy a tow atruck and get rid of the rest of them! :-)
I don't want to be a/the Debby Downer here, but...I would scope the cylinders on the 4-6 cylinder side(passenger side). Minimum pull the plugs on that side and see what they look like plus scope with pistons at BDC. That is a mild sound from my experience so nothing may show on the top side. The real test is drop the pan and scope from beneath car with piston at TDC. How do the tailpipes compare as far as soot/darkness? Any difference in appearance? Any oil usage? Year of car? Mileage? This doesn't sound catastrophic right now but the cadence sounds familiar.
No oil consumption
Both tips are the same dirtyness.
Car has 135k miles, 99 C2
Probably going to call the local Porsche indy tomorrow and see if I can get it in.
Garrett: Here is what mine sounded like at the end of 2018. Mine is much louder and heavier but similar/same cadence. Glad you are going to try to get it in. Might as well know what you are dealing with. BTW I don't believe that is a lifter...
#6 cylinder...#5 bad but not as bad. Like I said yours is similar but not near as loud or heavy. Stay calm and see what your Indi finds, however, if he says lifters come back here and advise before authorizing. Disclaimer: I am NOT an engine expert by any means. I am just sharing my thoughts and experience. Your issue could be something totally different than mine.
Everything on this engine is expensive. But its usually not lifters that need replacement.
You just bought this car.
I would call the place you bought it from and ask them if the knock was there when they got it. If they bought the car elsewhere, have them contact the sellers to see if the car was knocking. Just ask, see what they say. Eventually you will get to the person that could have - not saying they did - put some type of mystery oil to quiet down a known tick/knock issue. Again, this is a stretch, and Im sure nobody will ever admit to anything like this, but Im also sure stuff like this happens all the time.
In parallel, I would follow the advice to find the source of the tick before replacing any parts.
I bought it from a German expat in NYC. He gave me all the maintenance records, he bought it from a co-worker. It was well taken care of. I don't think he was the type to just dump some trash in it. He had it looked over by an Indi when he bought it and gave me the list of what was fixed and what wasn't. The PPI from the Indi didn't mention a tap. Lot of other things though.
Sorry fellow members. Been super busy with work so the car took a back seat and my Indy has been slammed. Dropping it off Thursday morning, will update his findings
One thing I did notice that I didn't mention previous.
The oil pressure when the car is cold is between the 4-5 mark on the gauge and it sounds fine but when it warms up (and starts tapping) the pressure drops way down and then you can hear the tapping
4-5 when cold is pretty normal. What does pressure drop to when fully warmed/hot at idle? Don't believe the oil pressure and tapping is related. My car was louder when hot, too The recording I posted was when hot. My oil pressure hardly ever got below 2 even when hot at idle and that is with a newer pressure sensor.
Just dropped it off. Indie had a C4S in for a scored liner. Rebuild was almost 20k so far after getting a short block.
Took him out to my car and he immediately said "that's not loud at all. I'd bet it's a lifter"
Said he would change the oil and see if it goes away. Asked me if I had burning oil or misfire or sooty exhaust. Negative on all.
Asked me to rev it. As soon as I give it gas and the oil pressure increases it goes away. He's convinced it's a lifter.
When cold, the pressure, according to the gauge is between 4-5. Silent. When warm it's between 2-3. Noise. When I blip the throttle it goes over 3 and bam no noise
We'll see

What type and weight of oil currently in the car?
How long/how many miles on the current oil?
Fingers crossed for you. If oil doesn't fix tread carefully depending on next recommendation...
Keep us apprised.
No clue on oil. Mileage or type. Only put 200 or so miles on it since purchase.
Considering the amount of 993s and GT Cup cars in his shop, I think I trust him. He also has a 928 he daily drives with 300+k miles on it
Shrug.
I would also check the oil pressure relief springs and valve. Those can sometimes make a ticking noise being affected by the oil pump pulses. Since it seems to be oil pressure related that is.
Just picked it up from Conway Autoworks
Said the engine is in good shape. Changed the oil. Noise is all but gone.
Definitely needs suspension and shift cables at 135k miles though
You know I didn't even pay attention. I was just so happy it doesn't need an engine I took it for a spirited drive. I'll check next time I drive it and report back!
