Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
18 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

Story makes little sense. Says this:
Major overhaul at 66967 miles (Oct-2015): IMS Bearing, Clutch and Flywheel, Heads rebuilt, Water Pump R&R, Cam Phasers, and original Cylinders and Pistons replaced upgrading displacement from 3.6 to 3.8. WATERCOOLED NICKIES FROM LN ENGINEERING. Engine overhaul work was verified and tested by Ideal Porsche of Asheville, NC
But it appears from receipts he went to three shops. First shop in June 2016 replaces cam selenoid and timing chain sensor for $1000. A few days and 11 miles later the second shop determines cam tensioner installed correctly. Fixed that and also did clutch and fly wheel at a cost of 5709. Then Car goes to Porsche Dealer because still shows codes, who have to take engine apart, install 4k in parts plus all labor. Car now has 11k more miles, and a recent Blackstone Oil test showing no unusual wear.
I also see a $6000 payment which seller says was for Nickies deposit a year before the above issues.
Car has been on ebay and has not sold. Anyone have knowledge?
Yeah not much of that makes sense. Who did the engine rebuild and what was the cost of that? Adding up all of the above numbers gets you just past the cost of Nickies, but won't touch the cost of a total rebuild. I question a $6,000 deposit one year in advance for the Nickies, never heard that before. Something seems off here. Maybe the owner is just confusing in his listing or perhaps on purpose. I would ask some probative questions.
If you decide to buy it. buy it from 24scout for only $2,025 that would be a bargain!
It doesn't mean the work wasn't done, or wasn't done adequately, just that the current owner is clueless - which isn't uncommon (not a knock, just reality) - and just doesn't understand the process/chronology. Then again, could be acting clueless to obfuscate...
Best I can surmise Engine Fails Summer 2015
“Yes, the car was in the shop for a year.”
“I paid L&N direct for the Nickies with a cashiers check I cannot locate”
I think Automedic does the install, unclear.
Automedic does chain tensioner mid July 2016 $1k
Harmony Motors fixes Automedics work end of July 2016 5.5k
Ideal Porsche (dealer) pulls engine August 2016 and adds $4k in new parts, plus labor
So no documentation on the engine "rebuild"/nickies installation???
In my book without that documentation, it didn't happen.
Even if the "rebuild" did happen in 2015 it must have not been very exhaustive considering the problems in 2016.
If me, I would walk away or better yet run away
OP, first of all I'd like to strongly recommend you remove these images of the check(s) and the invoice that contains the Ewing's personal information. Not only can everyone see their names and phone numbers, but you just displayed their personal bank routing information along with their account numbers. I'm sure Mr. Ewing trusted that you would keep it private to yourself and NOT post on the internet. In the 20+ years I ran a business, this is all a criminal would need to cause some havoc with their personal finances.
Second, I think this car is a great deal. I'd travel up and view it in person. If you're worried over the Nickies, then get the engine serial number and send it to Charles Navarro for confirmation. If everything lines up, this is a slam dunk deal on a very nice 996 Cabriolet.
Because who else do you know drives around with the name of a product on their official car tag?
$18,500 is a great deal. It would cost that much for the 3.8L engine/IMS/clutch upgrades. If you like it, set up a PPI with Ideal Porsche in Asheville and while you wait go and take your wife to see the Biltmore estate.
Could chain tensioners installed incorrectly, which throws off timing permanently damage engine? Valve slapping/hitting pistons if off enough. That's what was repaired last.
Seems like way to many questions and lack of documentation of a rebuild. If the tensioners were put in wrong what else was done wrong?? Did I mention...
This car seems to have to many unanswered WTF's for me. It's your money and depends on how big a gambler you are. Personally, I would keep looking for a different car. It could be the bargain of the year or the biggest headache ever. It could quickly become a roller that cost you $15k.
Honestly if the guy rebuilt or had the engine rebuilt he would have the documentation...period. That's just not something that "I can't find.". It was allegedly done in 2015-2016 not 1935 so the paperwork should be close to the top of the paperwork pile.
