Suggestion

Unlike more modern cars that will reset automatically, when you start the 996, the ECU does a check of the SRS system and if it see's an open circuit, then of course, it illuminated the airbag light to warn about a potential malfunction.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

9 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The old owner had wire run all over the car. Bad stereo wiring that I removed when I installed my new stereo. Today I found some more dead wiring under the seat and carpet. I cut it all out and made sure I didn't touch the factory wiring. I had the seat removed and unplugged. Now I put it all back together and the air bag light is on. Reading the posts on here, am I safe to assume that I have a loose connection to the seat belt now?

POST 2Original post

Don't know if you did,, but never disconnect air bags with the battery connected,, or any part of the SRS system. It will almost always set a SRS code, in some cases it will clear on its own in some you'll need a reset tool. Otherwise the seatbelt or the occupancy sensor if yours has one in the passenger seat.

POST 3Original post

I wouldn't jump to that conclusion. Use a code reader to read the code, identify and fix the issue (if there is one) and then reset the SRS fault/light. I've had a airbag light when swapping seats, so I just reset the code and all was good. You need a Porsche specific code reader. I have a Foxwell nt-510. The Durametric is another that many people use.

POST 4Original post

Likely just a code from not disconnecting the batt like others have said. If you dont have a tool to scan codes, get one. Durametric is best, but for simply reading codes, this this plus an app like Torque can read and reset such. Regardless, do the due diligence to make sure its just a code triggered from your monkeying around and not something wrong. Good luck.

Not entirely. Did you try to turn the car on BEFORE the seats were reconnected? I assume you did and that's why you now have an illuminating airbag light. Unlike more modern cars that will reset automatically, when you start the 996, the ECU does a check of the SRS system and if it see's an open circuit, then of course, it illuminated the airbag light to warn about a potential malfunction. Unfortunately, the 996 doesn't correct itself with the circuit is closed. At this point, the only way to reset it is by using a scanner like the Durametric or other Porsche compliant scanning devise. Make sure you purchase one with the capability to read and erase airbag codes.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for all the input. I have torque. I'll run the scanner on it. If not I guess I'll have to get someone to reset it for me.

POST 8Original post

Curious, did you turn the car on before the seat were reconnected?

Ya I wasn't thinking. My brother actually popped by with an Autolink reader. He brought up the code and cleared it. It listed it as a seat belt alarm. Now I will be smarter about it. Thanks for all the help!
