I used the stud in that location to secure the connector via the cap and lanyard so the connector doesnt regress back in the hole.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Facts: I haven't driven it for 2 weeks, in the garage, top down, key left in the console, alarm not set. Used porta jump to open trunk. Battery took the charge just fine but it did run all the way down as the clock reset. Thoughts?

POST 2Original post

Normal. You can buy a battery maintainer or drive it once a week. I choose to drive it once a week and put a smile on my face.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Battery was new in October.... I have gone 3-4 weeks between drives (I travel) and never had this issue.... I have a maintainer but don't always hook it up... I was curious if having the top down and not having the alarm on somehow left something active that would draw power.... The car usually only draws money$$$$$

POST 5Original post

hmmm, try it again w/o the key this time.... maybe you had the accesories on.

POST 6Original post

Unlocked there is more parasitic power drain than locked up with the alarm on.

POST 7Original post

Still could be a bad battery. Letting it totally discharge won't help it's life.

POST 8Original post

If you bought it in October then it is still under warranty. Take it back to the store and have it tested. I bought a new Bosch battery and was having problems a few months later. Pepboys replaced it after testing it with no problems. It should hold a charge for several weeks even with the alarm system, etc.

POST 9Original post

+1 for a bad battery. I had no idea how inconsistent the quality of car batteries was until I went through three on my last truck before getting a reliable one. But it's also true that the battery will hold its charge far better if you lock the car. There is a sleep mode that kicks in after 3 or 5 days - forget which - but it works. Left unlocked, there is a parasitic drain.

POST 10Original post

what parasitic drain? what is left on? I leave it unlocked in my garage...

POST 11Original post

Hi, Could it be the alternator? Last week I had to replace mine (996 '05 C4S; 18K miles). The battery checked out fine. The voltage meter had been registering 13V but occasionally just about 12V. Good luck.

POST 12Original post

Quotes source post: 7670470

Beats me, but the sleep mode is explained in the manual, and there is less current drawn from the battery in this mode than when the car is 'normal', so to speak. Leaving the car unlocked for an extended period raises your chances of a dead battery vs. locking it.

Question: is the notch on the passenger side cowling provided for a battery tender wire? 2001 996 Cabriolet

POST 14Original post

Quotes source post: 7669938

^^ This ^^ Put the top up and lock the car! If you're worried about it dying, put it on a battery tender...

Not that I know of but I'm sure someone has done it like that. Two main ways to connect a battery maintainer. One is through the lighter socket. This is simple because all you have to do is just plug it in. Second is to permanently connect a wiring harness with a plug to the battery. Sometimes this is a better way because if you lock up the car and the battery goes dead, you can connect your battery maintainer and get the car opened back up. Just don't leave the maintainer connector plug in the frunk!

POST 16Original post

If you run out from under the frunk lid toward the windshield there is no seal to upset.

After seeing your statement I decided to search the forum for ideas on this. Not that I have a battery issue but would like to have access to the battery if there ever was one. I saw in the 997 area what another rennlist member did and followed their lead. I had to extend the wires of the connector to make it reach and exit the cowl location on the far passenger side. I also had to trim a small piece of plastic away from the cowl (not visible with the exterior cap in place so the connector would fit through and exit the cowl. I used the stud in that location to secure the connector via the cap and lanyard so the connector doesnt regress back in the hole. Connection at the battery. Routing of the cable under the cowl and over the cabin air filter. Connector while in use. Connector stored.

POST 18Original post

I've had the original battery and one replacement since I bought my car in 04. Finally put another one in last month for the hell of it even though mechanic said nothing was wrong with it. Always left unlocked and with keys on the floor. Go figure, I guess the parasites don't affect my car!

POST 19Original post

Quotes source post: 16050725

I use one of these mounted next to the battery. That's what I do with a short extension cord. When the car is in use it just stays coiled up in the battery compartment. (the cushion thumb tacked to wall is where the door would touch if I get over zealous opening the door )

POST 20Original post

We leave the top down, car unlocked, keys in it and never have an issue.

POST 21Original post

FWIW, I use the lighter socket version and there is a little weatherstripping cutout on the bottom of the passenger door for the wire. Found it by accident one day.
