Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

25 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

I've purchased a couple of totaled but fixable cars back, and it worked out well for me.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My mechanic left my driver's window down or cracked and flooded the computer under the seat. 1" of water over it when I discovered it. Insurance totaled the car. 2001 C4 Cab with 72K. They stepped up to the plate and I now have 25K to find another 911. RWD? AWD? 997? Still want a Cab but targa would do. What do y'all recommend for the most bang and reliability?

POST 5Original post

If I could do it again and in your position..... I would give myself until the end of the year to find a perfect spec 997. Total patience and cash in hand to make it happen when the right car shows up. (not the right deal the right car. )

POST 7Original post

What was the salvage buyback value from insurance?

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 16002667

A surprising $22781.

POST 9Original post

Actually my question is different. You have the option to buy the totaled car back from them for salvage. Ask them what the salvage value of the car is as is. They may say it is like $5K. You can elect to keep the car and they would pay you the difference of $22781 and $5000 and give you the car and $17781. Someone like Norspec Dismantling would then pay you something like $6000 so that way you make an extra $1K. THey have done that with other RLers. In fact, depending on the Insurance buy back, I may even be interested. :-) Where are you located.

POST 10Original post

Those immobilizers under the seat can be replaced/repaired for $800-1500 . So long it was clean water not gunky flood water, the carpet and all can be cleaned and dried like new.

POST 11Original post

Quotes source post: 16002847

^^^ This! Combine dranon's and lowpue's ideas. The buyback cost is usually nominal - a fraction of the real value of the car. Buy it back from the insurance company cheap. Fix the issue. Sell the car. Now you have $35-40k to go buy your next 911. I've purchased a couple of totaled but fixable cars back, and it worked out well for me.

Nope. They refused responsibility. Its a other than collision claim, so won't count against me. And now my lawyer and my insurance's lawyer go after the shop. So, it will come fom them eventually.

Reliable and bang for the buck? Buy the earliest 996 you can find that also has the IMSB changed.

That's what I ended up doing. Found a 2002 c4 cab same color, silver. I am picking it up next week. All maintained by Porsche and they have shown me the record and IMS replacement as a preventative.
