Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that performed work without a confirmed outcome

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Leading evidence: 'Run with' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'more advanced racing, roll cages will be required' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Run cab' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suspected cause
But I suspect for more advanced racing, roll cages will be required.

Suggestion
Just doesn't make sense to run a cab on the track.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Considering picking up a cheap 996 04 cab c4 with factory hardtop as primary a track and maybe winter driver. I know the local PCA hpde events require a cab to have a roll bar, but does the factory hardtop provide protection similar to my c4s coupe or will i need to install one?
thanks
Depends on the sanctioning body. Some allow convertibles, some don't. Why risk it, pick up an early Carerra coupe and you can be fairly sure it will be allowed. They are readily available for decent prices.
I can say for certain, the time I rolled a rally car and ended up with the weight of the car on the roof when it ended, I was glad to have a metal roof! (...and a full cage, and a race seat, and a harness...)
For regular, amateur, PCA HPDE, the cab with the pop up extensions are ok. I run mine without a roll cage at HPDEs. But I suspect for more advanced racing, roll cages will be required.
This depends on the club. I'm safety chair for the club I run with. We allow cabs to run only in our beginner run group. After that you need to either get a roll bar, or a different car. Just doesn't make sense to run a cab on the track.
Appreciate all the responses. Cab wouldnt be my first choice for track car but I mistakenly thought factory hard top provided protection which i now know it doesnt. Thought cheap salvage titled cab might make an interesting dedicated track car rather than abuse my c4s.
Thanks again
Or just drive your C4S on the track too. These cars were engineered to be driven hard. The price of a cheap used 996 would probably still be more than you'd spend on sticky tires, brakes and other bits for the track for your C4S. Unless you really plan to go all the way with tricking a car out for the track and making it unstreetable, in which case the coupe makes even more sense.
This. I've done three PCA HPDE days this year in my C4S cab. I put the factory hard top on, but could have just kept the soft top up for my particular region and events. Do it, you won't regret it.
