Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Is there a slick way to clean old grease from bearings and regrease or is it still a toothbrush/ simple green thing?
Leading evidence: 'Clean grease' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean grease' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I will also be replacing the 18 year old top strut mounts with new ones before they fail.

I'm going to use an anhydrous calcium based grease.

If you use grease you need to get all the old grease off so it doesn't foul the new grease causing it to do one of two things: harden or liquify, thereby losing it's lubrication value.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The bearings at the top of the front struts allow them to twist when the suspension is moving. The rear doesnt have that. You need to keep contaminants out of that top mount bearing.
Hmmm. Might be right. I can't read the numbers.
Anyway, you are at least partially right and get credit. The other part of the answer to what kind of spring it is would be?
Broken.
I'm looking at options. I guess that's not unheard of. Is it common?
C2 struts have them too. The whole strut housing turns when the front wheels turn. In fact, the strut is the pivot axis around which the steering angle rotates. If the top mounts didnt have bearings, because of the weight of the car, the springs would cause resistance against the wheels turning to steer, especially while cornering.
Ok, got a day off. I've got replacement springs, so I'm ready to re assemble the spring/strut. I will also be replacing the 18 year old top strut mounts with new ones before they fail.
It looks like the top bearing gets water exposure from below in the wheel well. Is this a marine grease application? Or just white lithium bearing grease?
Those aren't H&R sport springs. They look stock. Look up the paint markings - looks like two white dots, but can't be sure - it looks like some might be scraped off...
I greased my new strut mount bearings with silicone grease. No moisture absorbance. Quiet now for years. Weird to see the broken spring...must have been one helluva pothole!
Thanks, it really doesn't need bearing grease per se since it probably won't see even a full revolution but once in a blue moon but the race looks like it could be vulnerable to water and contamination along the inner ring. What does the factory do here?
Does the C2 bearing plate come apart as well?
getting ready to do my struts as well just buying parts each payday if I can save them I can do them sooner
I can't say. The diagrams don't show this one as multipiece either so it's possible. I would not be surprised.
I'm going to use an anhydrous calcium based grease. It is a marine grease that has better qualities for this application than a generic lithium grease, primarily better water resistance, as this bearing is at the top of the wheel well and will see splashing. If you use grease you need to get all the old grease off so it doesn't foul the new grease causing it to do one of two things: harden or liquify, thereby losing it's lubrication value. Think of the times you have seen grease do one or the other.
That photo above does seem to show the "H" in the H&R logo (with a series of #'s after it) - I didn't catch that in the original photo... What are the new springs? Eibach maybe? I think I have read thread about them failing ( definitely the sway bars, but not sure about the springs - they seem to be somwhat softer than the H&R's...)
