Hooked a "traditional" charger on while disconnected from car for about 30 minutes to get above minimum voltage requirement then hooked up my 1.25a Deltran and within a couple of days everything was happy.

The reason I asked is I used the 800ma version for my 93 300zx that sits outside during the winter.

I use a Battery Tender Jr that I picked up from WalMart for under $30.

Suggestion
Since I have owned my 996 cab (13 yrs+), I have been using the OEM Porsche trickle charger through the cigarette lighter port for the winter months hibernation and never had any issue.

Suggestion
Also never jump from that point or directly at the battery - always use the terminals in the engine bay - positive on the + in the plastic box and the negative on the air box holder bolt.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey Everyone,
This was my first time setting up the battery charger on this car. I read the owners manual and, to be honest, ive never seen a setup like this on any other car. It said to hook it up to a fuse you pull out of the fuse box, then connect the positive cable to the handle where the door goes. I followed the instructions to the letter ( see attached) just want some validation that I did it right. Is this the right setup?
Your setup should work, provided that the fusebox lead is at 12v. Note that you've (correctly) connected the black (= ground) lead to the body of the car. It would be a serious mistake to connect the positive lead there, as your text implies.
Definitely simpler: Attach charger to the car's electrical system via a plug that connects to the cigarette lighter.
This is typically how you jump the hood/rear hatch releases (to open frunk and engine lid if battery is dead). You don't need to go this route, just to charge the battery. Either simply open the frunk and remove the battery cover (plastic cover with two thumb fasteners up toward the windscreen) and place clamps directly on battery posts....or you can charge directly to the cigarette lighter, but you need to gear up an adaptor to plug into the lighter port.
Ok that sounds like a great way to charge the battery, I never knew that was possible. So theres an attachment that you can charge the battery via the cigarette lighter? where would I find one of these? By the way thanks for the reply
Since I have owned my 996 cab (13 yrs+), I have been using the OEM Porsche trickle charger through the cigarette lighter port for the winter months hibernation and never had any issue. You can use Google to locate one online, many places have them. Cheers,
Here's an example:

Or, you could find some outdated item (old radar detector ?) designed to be powered via the cigarette lighter and lop off its cord.
Seems like an appropriate way to trickle charge a German car. Goes with the territory of over-engineering instead of a more direct, simple, fool-proof way of accessing the battery under the frunk.
Direct to battery or cigarette lighter. That way you can shut your door! The instructions you followed are for hooking another battery to assist in opening the frunk on a MK2 with a dead battery. And by trickle charger assume you mean battery maintainer.
This approach seems unnecessarily complicated.
Why not just connect directly to the battery? Or add a lead from the battery to a convenient location - Battery Tender makes some decent ones with SAE connectors.
+996 just connect the charger directly to the battery - as other have stated thats just to open the frunk/rear in the event your battery has died.
Also never jump from that point or directly at the battery - always use the terminals in the engine bay - positive on the + in the plastic box and the negative on the air box holder bolt.
I bought a black and decker trickle charger from Walmart. Came with three different attachments. One of them was conveniently a cigarette lighter adapter. 6 or 12 volt with auto shut off to prevent overcharging. 20 bucks and done.
CTEK makes the Porsche charger and they have a cigarette lighter attachment, besides charging it will also recondition the battery. The CTEK version is cheaper than the Porsche, its available on Amazon.
Quoted for emphasis. A trickle charge and a battery maintainer (aka float charger) are similar but different animals.
If the battery is dead or low and needs to be charged overnight or over a period of days, a trickle charger is the best best.
If the battery is to be on a charger for a prolonged period of time like winter storage, a maintainer is needed.
Yes, I know people tend to use these terms interchangeably. I think this is unfortunate and perhaps even dangerous should an unsophisticated but well-meaning Porsche owner attempt to trickle charge his/her car for the winter. Batteries don't like that.
I use a Battery Tender Jr that I picked up from WalMart for under $30.
I hardwired the pigtail to the battery and added an extension from Amazon.
I ran it up to the cowl and it is hidden behind the cover over one of the mounting screws.
I hook up the tender when I'm not going to be driving my car for a few days. (Usually long weekends that are booked with family time)
I have pigtails on all of my vehicles, and I have a couple of Battery Tender Jrs.
I aslo purchased and installed one for my in-laws.(86 & 78)
She(78) only drives them both once every other week so she was opening their hood and putting their battery on an ancient large charger the day before they planned on driving somewhere.
Now with the pigtail and outlet nearby she always has their car lugged in when parked.
I need to install an outlet overhead and get an electrical reel like I have to make it easier for her to plug in their car.
The reason I asked is I used the 800ma version for my 93 300zx that sits outside during the winter. In the spring I went out to start it and the one year old battery was so dead the maintainer wouldn't work because the voltage had fallen below the threshold. I figured bad battery and checked it out. Nope it checked good just flat. Hooked a "traditional" charger on while disconnected from car for about 30 minutes to get above minimum voltage requirement then hooked up my 1.25a Deltran and within a couple of days everything was happy. I thought I had a parasitic drag greater than the 800ma, checked. Nope! I dunno, but I'm using a larger capacity maintainer this winter and will see what happens this spring. I do use the 1.25a Deltran for the P-car and it works well.
Well, since we don't really have a winter, at least one that rarely gets below the 50s, I don't use mine long-term.
The longest my in-laws have used theirs is three weeks.
All of my cars get driven more often than that.
My last car that sat for a long time got sold so I could drop the insurance.
