I drive over a pass every day to work and as a result my windshield has lots of tiny little nicks from the flying sand they use during the winter.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

10 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I drive over a pass every day to work and as a result my windshield has lots of tiny little nicks from the flying sand they use during the winter. Normally it's not a big deal since I can't see them, but now that the sun is low in the sky, it can be blinding when driving. Has anyone had any experience with having your windshield "restored"? I've heard that windshields can be restored in a similar fashion to paint by first sanding them, then using higher grit polishing pads until you get a perfect surface again. I've never seen this done, but I've read that it can be. I have a clear bra on the entire front of the car (but not the windshield), so it's protected, but this glass thing is annoying! Thanks as always for the comments.

POST 2Original post

Don't waste your time with that and just replace it with a good quality new one. Polishing glass is not like polishing paint, if the scratches/pitting is too deep, it will not come out and if it does, it will more than likely cause the glass to distort because it's not a uniform thickness anymore. Don't get a cheap Chinese glass either as they are usually pretty soft and you will end up with pitting in a couple of years (ask me how I know).

I agree and I've known folks that have tried to do this to other classic cars, it never worked out for them. Get a good quality OEM replacement.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the info. Isn't the radio antenna connected to the windshield glass? Is that an issue with replacing it?

POST 5Original post

The new windshield will have the embedded antenna.

POST 6Original post

Replace it and go through your insurance. I had the same issue, took it to have a new windshield replaced and they got it done through my insurance. If the pitting is causing a glare and this becomes a safety issue, your insurance should cover it (that is if you have glass replacement in your policy).

Great suggestion! Thanks

POST 8Original post

I used to work for a car dealership and we'd occasionally have windshields "polished" for cars on the used lot. It didn't really do much and I always felt it was a waste of money.
