I own an independent automotive repair shop, and have been in the repair industry for 25 years, so the potential mechanical issues with the 996 don't scare me.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

This may be a bit long winded, so please bear with me. My wife has been large SUV laden since 2002. Her last one, a 2015 Expedition EL was experiencing paint delamination from the tailgate and hood. Noticed at 3 years old, and going back in forth trying to get this factory defect corrected, it became apparent I had 2 choices, either sue Ford or pony up 5000 to fix it, with no guarantee it wouldn't happen again in another 3 years. I picked the 3rd choice and kicked that thing down the road. At this point we really don't need a big SUV anymore, as we have gone from 3 kids at home to 2 at home and only 1 not driving. So when given the choice of what to buy next, my wife wanted to go back to her roots (when we met she had an 89 911 Strosek Speedster) and get another Porsche. We found a very nice 5900 mile 2017 Macan S and traded the Expedition in on it. I added a Cobb tuner, a Remus exhaust, and some high flow air filters. What a blast to drive, and more power than any SUV really needs. At this point my jealousy is really kicking up. She's sporting this awesome little SUV and I am Porsche less. This can not be! I somehow managed to convince my better half we simply must have a second Porsche in the garage, one we can share in the summer. When she wants to go top down, I'll rock the Macan. When she wants her car, I have my own little sports car. Don't get much more mid life crisis than that! So I began the search for a budget summer Porsche. I didn't want to spend an arm and a leg, the Boxster just didn't do it for me, I couldn't justify the money for an aircooled or 997, but the 996 seemed to fit the bill perfect. I researched, studied, read reviews, read criticisms, and determined what was important to me. I own an independent automotive repair shop, and have been in the repair industry for 25 years, so the potential mechanical issues with the 996 don't scare me. I decided for the budget I had a mk1 that had been well taken care of but with high mileage would be ideal. A convertible was a must. A hardtop would be really nice as it would extend my season here in New Hampshire by probably 3 months. After looking at a couple of duds I found this one, a 2000 triple black Carrera. 120K miles on the clock, never driven in the snow, good service records, built 7/99 so most likely has a dual row IMS, owner had a magnetic drain plug installed when he bought it 5 years ago and had it noted at every oil change that it was clean. I performed a pre purchase inspection and though there are some cosmetic issues, a couple minor mechanical issues, the car performed well and has "good bones". We negotiated out a price and I picked it up this past weekend on my trailer so I could keep it out of the salt. I've got a solid 3 months before I can drive it, but I have plenty of projects to do between now and the spring. I plan on doing a full paint correction, go through a full maintenance program, get the steering wheel refurbished, and tidy up some interior bits. Gonna be a long winter! Quick wash after getting her home One is good, two is more gooder The only snow it will see, in the driveway

POST 2Original post

Welcome !! Nice looking car, I have the same "997 Turbo Wheels". I think they are the best looking design that Porsche has produced as of yet, and gives the 996.1 a 8-10yr newer look ...

POST 3Original post

That is crazy about the paint issues on a 2015. I had 2004 VW Golf R32 in tornado red, I was lucky but those had serious clear coat issues. They only made 500 but it was well over 10% failure rate, people could pull their clear coat off in sheets.

So the issue with the Ford has to do with them prepping their aluminum panels prior to sealing them. They did not clean them properly and they would seal them with iron dust on them. The iron would cause the aluminum to oxidize, and the paint had nothing to adhere to. This past spring I had the car detailed and noticed paint all over the parking lot. I opened the gate and noticed there was nearly no paint left on the inside of the liftgate. I checked the hood and found the same situation. The car was 3 years and 4 months old. Granted it had 80K miles on it, but come on, it's paint not a set of tires. Unfortunately refinishing oxidized panels isn't possible so they have to be replaced. Ford's customer service was absolutely atrocious to deal with, though the dealer did go to bat for us. They weren't willing to compromise at all. Their corrosion warranty isn't worth the paper it is written on. It's a shame, because it was really a great vehicle aside from that.

Ridiculous. Corrosion usually has a 10-year warranty on it too and its nuts they did not honor it. For paint to fail that quickly, regardless of miles it has to be a defect in the work unless it's in some Siberian winter or something.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 15549241

The loophole they use is that it is a perforation warranty. If a hole had corroded through the panel they would have replaced it, but every ounce of paint could fall off of it, and if there wasn't a hole in the panel Ford won't do a thing about it. The only way that would be covered is if the damage was reported before the 3/36 bumper to bumper warranty expired. We had 36K on it in under a year and a half of ownership.

Ha yes! I had a a MKIV Tornado Red R32 that experienced that issue. Would have kept the car a lot longer but decided to dump it before it became too severe. Congrats on the new P-car.

POST 9Original post

We are also 2017 Macan + 2004 996 C2 Cab family! /X3

POST 10Original post

How much do you both regret getting rid of the Strosek? The 996/Macan combo is definitely enviable!

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

At the time, our kids were young and it never got driven. Cost us $1800 a year to insure it in Massachusetts and it was driven shortly 3 times. It had it's drawbacks that made it less than practical to use. The headlights royally sucked, the top leaked, it was low and easy to scrape. Just enough stuff to worry about that made you not want to drive it if you were going to be out at night, or if the weather might get iffy, or if you were going somewhere where you weren't familiar with the roads. It just didn't make sense to keep it. It would probably have been an appreciating asset looking at what the air cooled cars have done, but at the time there was no way to know that. It was my wife's car, it was her call, and she wanted to sell it. She was almost immediately remorseful about it but we both said when the time was right we would find another 911. 16 years later the time is right apparently.

POST 12Original post

The pain was so real!! I miss that car, I even had cloth seats, Lol. So much time into that car, cams, head work, headers, haldex, blah blah blah. That paint fiasco ruined it for me, I'll never buy another tornado red VAG car again. Heart breaking.

Im sure plenty of great memories were made while it was there. Now you have twice the Porsches with which to make new memories!

Just picked up a macan and hoping for a 911 turbo down the road ... pending some more life goals.

Welcome Matt! Yes, I have to agree that these wheels look great on a 996. Can I ask the size of the wheels and tires?

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 15605502

They are knock off turbo wheels as they are 18" and Porsche never made this wheel style in an 18. I don't know the rim size but the tires are 225/40/18 on the front and 265/35/18 on the rear. I really like the look of them and the fact they are 18's instead of 19's.

POST 17Original post

Great looking almost matching cars! I'm hoping to do the same but the opposite - have the 911 already want to buy a Macan!
