POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi everyone, I have been waiting for too long to pull the trigger on buying my first Porsche. I had decided years ago that the 996 is the only 911 within reach for me. That being said, I've been increasingly choosy in my search that I basically now only want the cleanest 996 I can get. I have the opportunity to purchase a 1 owner 2000 C2 with less than 14,000 miles. The previous owner was very particular and the car has never been tracked. The option list is very short but its been had more service than was needed and it being the low millage and color (Ocean Blue) that I really like. It was just offered for sale yesterday and the seller is standing firm at $31K What would you pay? VIN: WP0AA2998YS621226 Any and all thoughts are welcome and valued. Thanks !

POST 2Original post

In my opinion that is a lot of money for that car. I think the going price for a similar car is around the mid teens. At least that is what I remember seen when I was looking 9 months ago, for reference I purchased an 02 C4S for well less that his asking price. Also, keep in mind that the lower miles does not exclude you from IMS, Water pump, and other issues, you still have to address these.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ok, I did forget to mention that the IMS has been taken care of. I am enamored with the low millage, is that not worth so much?

POST 4Original post

There's the old adage that something is worth whatever someone is willing to pay. And of course supply and demand. Take a look at the popular sales sites right now and you'll be hard pressed to find another similar car with that low mileage. Based on what's for sale right now and their asking prices, combined with some recent Bring A Trailer sales, my suggestion (and it is only that) is that the car should sell for $25k.

POST 5Original post

Look what 30k will buy in 996/997. Unless it has some unique options or provenance, that's much more than I'd pay.

POST 6Original post

Let them stand firm, I bet they will lower their price when it doesn't sell. Standing firm never sells cars when selling on your own. People want a deal, and if they don't talk the seller down a bit they feel like they didn't get one. You should always ask for more than you actually want. If they want $31K, they should have listed for higher. I think it is priced a little high, but perhaps not because of the low mileage. But shft22 is correct that low miles don't necessarily mean trouble free. I worked on a 25 year old Toyota Camry last week with 42K miles. (less than 1700 miles per year ) They also gave me all their receipts for repairs. It had "recently" had CV Joints, CV boots, water hoses, plugs, coils, transmission pan gasket, differential gasket and front struts replaced. I quoted, and will soon replace, the oil pan gasket, hood shocks, and front and rear brakes. I'm sending it out for new tires. It looks brand new inside and out, but age got to everything instead of mileage.

POST 7Original post

Quotes source post: 15584110

Great point. If not in any rush to sell, why not try?

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I too was thinking 25K sounded reasonable. I know there are thousands of 996's out there but I can't seem to shake the feeling that this low millage creampuff won't be around very long. Its tough because Ive been looking so long that I now limit my search to low millage, 1-2 owner cars with "perfect" service history and it has to be one of 3 colors. It really limits my options. On a side note, I'm feeling a time crunch because my wife has the baby itch coming on STRONG and if that happens first I'm afraid my 911 dream will go up in a smoke.

POST 10Original post

Low-mileage examples are attractive to many buyers. Provided this one truly is in great shape with no problems, I expect it will go for close to the asking price - say, $29K.

POST 11Original post

I wouldn't fixate on the low mileage. I would rather a car that didn't sit for long periods of time. It would be one thing if it was a rare model, but a 2000 C2 without a ton of options isn't a rare car. You could buy as nice a car for 25K and have 6 grand in your pocket to do with as you please. I personally bought a clean car but with high mileage for 16, because I'm not scared of the car mechanically, I think it was the right money for the car, and my mission for the car really doesn't justify me spending more than that. Even at super low mileage, I would have the car checked out thoroughly by a knowledgeable professional.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm not afraid of a car with higher mileage, mechanically speaking, I just know how particular I am and that I have a better chance of being satiated with a particularly low millage choice. Still, the question is HOW much is that worth...Im getting the feeling its not 31K. I'm appreciative for the great feed back.

POST 13Original post

How exciting to find the ONE! I know your question well because I ran into a similar situation with my wife's car. She found a VW Beetle, 2006, with something like 1300 miles annual average use by a little old lady who bought, serviced and returned it to the same dealer. To me, the car was 12 years old, less than 36,000 miles and still had the new car leather smell. I liked it and paid what I felt it was worth. Did I pay a little more than market value, YEP. But not a ton over market value. I think the $31k is over market value, but you have to be happy. Market value does not always account for everything, the mind and spirit have some say too.

POST 14Original post

Quotes source post: 15584258

I guess the question I should have asked is what mission do you have for the car? Are you going to drive the wheels off of it or are you going to drive it very sparingly and take loving care of it? If it's drive the wheels off of it, the added value of the low miles and condition is going to evaporate quickly. Not saying one way or another is best, but when I was faced with answering the question of what I was going to do with the car, I didn't want one so nice that I was going to be paranoid when I parked it somewhere, or if my wife or daughter were driving it. In short, I wanted the car for fun, not for a show piece. Unfortunately in the past I have bought things that were actually too nice. I spent more time worrying about them, cleaning them, agonizing over every little chip and scratch that I just didn't enjoy the ownership. I admire people that can seemingly effortlessly keep a vehicle perfect, I am unfortunately not one of those people.

POST 15Original post

Don't forget that unless the oil has been changed annually, that could cause issues too. When was the IMSB changed as it has a shelf life? $25K would be fair but you may have to still replace some parts due to age as mentioned above. It's exciting and I wish you luck!

POST 16Original post

That car will almost definitely sell for that price. If I were you and really wanted that car, I wouldnt hesitate to buy it at that price or youll miss out. If you really want to find a 996 that meets your criteria, be ready to pay in the $30k range. If price is more important to you than the car you end up with and you dont mind the inconveniences of searching and dealing with sellers and waiting, then you can definitely find a nice 996 for $25k. To me, a few thousand dollars on a car I want where I dont have to deal with all the nonsense associated with car buying is nothing. But most people on this forum seem to be more afraid of looking foolish for having paid too much, which is totally arbitrary, than they are with getting what they want without a huge hassle. Im not most people. I say buy it if you want it.

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thats a great point about my intended usage. It will of course be a second car and used on my days off as a run around, weather permitting. I guess what I'm thinking now is that I will use it sparingly-ish. I honestly wasn't aware the IMSB had a shelf life. I attached the CARFAX, it might give some insight to the previous owners attention. I know I'm not the only one who could be truly interested in this particular vehicle.

Quotes source post: 15584105

Hey 1time, Like you I am looking at a 996. As a data point 33k mile 2002 4cs and asking price is 30k, but a PPI showed a likely RMS leak, even though the IMS was just recently done. Make sure you have the car thoroughly inspected. I am arranging a second inspection, drop the pan, bore scope, camshaft alignment check ... basically an IMS pre-qualification. The shop I am having the work done at has a 20k mile 996 up on a lift. Buyer just bought their "dream" car. After they bought it they took it to the shop. The engine is now out of the car and a new factory long block is on the bench ready to be installed. I saw the engine that came out of the car, the scoring on the cylinders was unbelievable. The "dream" turned into a nightmare. Even with low miles, make sure you do your due diligence on the car. I am sure the person who bought the car at the shop was also "enamored" with it. I can only imagine how I would feel after getting the news that a low mileage vehicle would need a new engine, right after purchase! I feel sorry for the buyer.

POST 19Original post

For that money I would buy a roller 996 and have an engine rebuild by F6 with nickies etc. I think you would save around 8k and have a really nice motor with no worries.

POST 20Original post

I just bought a '01 C4 with 12,500 miles (one owner, garage kept) for $21K. The IMS and water pump has to be done. It also needed new tires as they were original.

POST 21Original post

Quotes source post: 15584271

In 2017 I bought my 2006 Ford Mustang with only 19,000 miles.(1700 avg miles/yr) Looking at the CarFax it had been driven only 300 miles some years. It lwas 11 years old and looked like a brand new car. I paid a premium and the car has been pretty reliable. It now only has 24,000 miles on it, but is now stored outside because: Porsche! So yes, sometimes I would agree with paying a little more. But with an old Porsche, I would make certain to get a PPI that includes dropping the sump and scoping the bores before spending $30K.

POST 22Original post

I think the car will sell for close to asking. But if I had to do it all over again, I wouldn't buy a low mileage car. A lot of things on this car need to replaced just due to age - there's a good chance many of these things have been replaced on a driver. My 19K mile car has had the following things done after purchase (now at 37K miles): IMS Solution, RMS, Clutch & flywheel, water pump, coolant expansion tank, rectifier, secondary air injector, shocks and catalytic converters. On the bubble - frunk struts, window regulator, suspension bushings. A lot (maybe all) of these things probably would have been addressed on a driver. Low mileage premium + cost of deferred/overlooked repairs = not worth it. These cars are not going to be collectible anytime soon...I don't think buying a garage queen is worth it. I would follow Chris's lead - for that money, roller + 3.8 or 4.0 FSI rebuild. You'll just have to wait. If you're looking to buy this car and you need to do IMS/RMS and other preventative maintenance - forget it, make the stretch and look for a turbo.

POST 23Original post

Quotes source post: 15584495

Are you seeing this? Who's "dumb" (as you say) for 996 owners pointing a newbie in the right direction? Buyer beware! Great cars, just make sure you know what you're in for...

POST 24Original post

As someone who has done a lot of reading here and elsewhere about these cars, 14K miles would scare me. That's only about 800 miles a year. No car benefits from sitting that much. And there are few known problems these cars have that show up as they are being used. I am thinking mostly of things like the coolant expansion tank. This appears to be a common enough problem, and this car hasn't been driven enough for it to have made itself known. Other than that, this is a duplicate of my car. I love it more than any car I owned. My PO had the IMS done and the coolant tank, but other than that I have had very few issues. There is an opinion that early cars with the 3.4 have fewer overall issues, but that is just an opinion.

POST 25Original post

Here is one more data point for you to consider. 2006 C2S with 13,000 miles sold on BAT for $45k yesterday, $47,450 with the buyer's premium. Not saying this is a good deal or a bad deal, but someone thought that car was worth that amount of money. Obviously a different car than a 2002, with different equipment, but at least it is similar mileage. Some people put a huge premium on low miles, others do not for the (many) reasons listed above. In my case I wanted something that was not so perfect that I would not drive it - cars to me are to be driven. If I had to worry constantly about it that would take the fun away for me. https://bringatrailer.com/listing/20...-carrera-s-28/ Daryll

POST 26Original post

I do not think that 800 annual miles is unreasonable for a car that is carefully maintained. It's clearly not a daily driver, and I will be hard pressed to account for 1,000 miles per year on my car. Is the price a bit high? Yes, but given the mileage, updated IMS, and care by the original owner....where are you going to find another like it? You'll kick yourself in the butt for letting the car you want get away for, say, $2,000 and then need to go through the agonizing process again knowing that the cars you'll find will not measure-up to this car. It's not like he's asking a $10k premium.... I do feel that these cars are beginning to be discovered and the values will catch-up to what you paid for it.

POST 27Original post

There's still a lot of 996's out there! Take your time and get the one that checks all your boxes. Just don't strap yourself right out of the gate. Make sure you have a $5-7K cushion. I just noticed that some idiot clipped my passenger mirror while parked away from anyone else, sure glad it's not a garage queen!

POST 28Original post

As stated, I wouldn't do it, but Battery guy brings up a good resource for comps. BAT has it's sales history - I think the car in mention probably would make the criteria to be sold there. BAT tends to generate higher prices then average. Some notes, 1999 models sell for a premium - particularly with Aero kit. 4S and Anniversery editions also go for higher. My opinion is that desirable options do impact price, but not as much on the super low mile examples. Here's a few I found after a quick search. Happy hunting. Either way, the 996 is a great deal for the money. https://bringatrailer.com/porsche/996/ https://bringatrailer.com/listing/19...11-carrera-39/ https://bringatrailer.com/listing/19...11-carrera-27/ https://bringatrailer.com/listing/20...911-carrera-3/ https://bringatrailer.com/listing/2004-porsche-911-12/ https://bringatrailer.com/listing/20...11-carrera-25/

How many 13K miles, one owner 996s are left? And in a unique color? OP, buy what you want. In the end its only money.

I know of a 1500 mile AE that's for sale right now $75k and it was sold 100 miles ago when the asking price was $55K, kind of crazy if you ask me. There's a nice AE for $21K right now with under 100K miles.

POST 31 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm not looking for a garage queen per se, but the thought of buying a roller and having an engine rebuild by RSI sounds interesting albeit not exactly why I originally became interested in the 911. I'm not looking to track the car or race around town either. I have to say there are 2 definative camps here. Camp 1 says move on find another 996 for less and Camp 2 says go for it all the way. There seams to be a 25% bias in favor of just finding another car. I could have never imagined the great response that I have found here. Thank you all.

POST 32Original post

Tough choice you have, good luck! Super fun cars to drive...

POST 33Original post

What are your intentions with the car? If you plan on keeping it as a garage queen, than maybe its the right car for you. If you want to use it as an actual car, even a weekend car etc I would look for something that has been driven. Things dry out and rot out while sitting too. I look look for a clean car, around 60k-70k miles that has all the records and IMS done. Look to pay low to mid 20s. Either way I think 31k is way too high. The low mileage doesn't justify the price in my opinion.

POST 34Original post

Quotes source post: 15585171

Wow, they should drive it another 100 miles and shoot for $95K! I'd rather have the 100K AE and enjoy driving it... ...and have $34K available for a rebuild... ...or a 996 Turbo too... ...or...

POST 35Original post

To add another opinion, if this is the color and spec you want and if you place a premium on mileage, condition, history and one-owner (I did in all these regards) then pony up. Life is short and you can always make more money. Chances you find another car in the color/condition/one-owner with a history? Probably 1000:1. So if it takes you another 3-5 years to find it, that's another 3-5 years without the 911 of your dreams. Who knows what happens by then? Health is never a given, enjoy it while you can. Whatever you decide, you'll know the right car when you stumble upon it. In that case, act fast or it will be gone. If you're not feeling it, maybe this isn't the one.

POST 37Original post

Is it the ocean blue 6spd coupe at Sunset? I think 31k is about market for a 1-owner 13k example. Rennlist historically undervalues vehicles but my experience shopping the 996 market the past 6 months and watching BAT, high 20's - low 30's is a realistic number. Mid-mileage 996's are selling on BAT for 25k all day long, so not sure why people here think a 13k example would bring the same money. The market for these cars has shifted. They aren't the giveaway they were just a year or two ago.

POST 38Original post

You can pull up just about any and every city and find 996's for sale, they're everywhere. The bottom line is there are still good cars out there for fair money. The low mileage cars are the scary ones, as said before. Just do your homework and make the best decision for you! Auctions are not the norm to mark value in my opinion...

POST 39Original post

For the OP - this just came up yesterday on BAT. As others have noted, BAT may give a higher than normal value for low mileage or special cars, but this one appears to be pretty close to the car the OP is looking at. In a few days you will at least know what someone thinks it is worth. https://bringatrailer.com/listing/20...11-carrera-24/ Daryll

There will be that one guy that just has to have "Speed Yellow" (and has the money for it)...I expect it to go high.

POST 41Original post

I REALLY like Speed Yellow, especially @lowpue 's 996! https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...n-my-cars.html If the BAT auction 996 was an Aerokit Speed Yellow I would really have "the wants."

POST 42Original post

If you really like the car then buy it contingent on a very thorough PPI, for top dollar you should get top shelf condition and maintenance records etc. If it needs nothing enjoy the car if something comes up request price adjustment, this way you should end up with a great car.

POST 44Original post

Based on the build date of 12/99 this car likely had a dual-row IMS bearing. Waste of money to replace it. I'd be more concerned about the piston coating and bore scoring with such low miles.

POST 45Original post

https://www.audisarasota.com/used/Po...a73ecd6eb0.htm the one in Sarasota Audi. Looks nice but like basic with no options. Kinda steep but if thats the one you want go for it. I would wait them out a little if it was me ..here's a georgeous green one C4 https://www.redefinedautos.com/inven...tails/50432042

POST 46Original post

I love green and think the 60's is a sweet spot.

POST 47 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So I went to take a look at it. It was as pristine as youd expect it to be. I really love that color. It has a stack full of records, the previous owner changed oil 10 times in 13,400 miles. He even kept the original IMS to go with the vehicle. Talked to the sales manager and he was happy to put the vehicle on the lift and let me take my time with it. Found a few minor issues that werent a deal breaker and instead opened the door to a bit of negotiation. We settled on $28,250 Very happy new Porsche owner right here.

POST 48Original post

Buy what you want. Personally a 20 yr old 996 with only 13k miles scares me. These cars that sit will rot. Seals dry out, bearings will pit. I think they should be driven regularly. Do a search for Jake Raby or Flat six innovations on this forum re low mileage cars....

WoW! Congrats on the purchase!! Premium price for sure - hopefully you get a premium experience to go along with it. Though I don't see this one sale as an overall trend maker, it does seem like the prices are starting to trend up a bit. The high mileage cars and rollers will be cheap for many years to come, but the really good cars are resisting the low ballers...

POST 60Original post

Beautiful car and a great color. Congrats! Of course, we need moar pics though. I was kind of in the same boat as you back in the spring of 2017. I had been looking for a low mileage car with as few previous owners as possible. I’ve found, the more owners, the more wiring hacks and questionable mods. I also was hoping for a somewhat complete maintenance history. I ended up finding a 35k mile one owner car with meticulous maintenance and every receipt (and I mean EVERY) since new. RMS, IMS and AOS had been done along with some other spendy items. Did I pay too much? Probably. I’ve never looked back and enjoy the car immensely. I spent the first year dialing it in for my personal taste. You can read my thread but be warned, it’s kind of long. https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...onth-long.html

POST 61Original post

Good looking car, congrats! I hope you drive it more than the previous owner! Regarding the oil changes, it's nice the owner changed the oil regardless of miles. FSI recommends 6 months or 5K miles, which ever comes first. I think others shoot for 5K or at least once a year.

POST 62Original post

Congrats on the purchase, that paint shines like it just rolled off the line!

POST 63Original post

Beautiful car. You did well. I personally think that sort of low mileage car is going to appreciate in the coming years. I paid $27k for an aero 996 with 26k miles on it; the low mileage cars are out there.

POST 64 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yeah I paid a premium for what, to me, feels like a new car. I still see so much value here. Its so fresh and SO clean 😎 And best of all, my wife digs it. Thanks for all the well wishes ! 🤙🏽

One owner '02 in Guards Red with 43k on the odometer. ~30k. Looks like there may be plenty of service records. POST 67Original post

OP - congrats!! I dont think you paid a premium by the way. Maybe if you paid $32-$35k, then sure. 13k miles is almost like new. Which means that even if you drive it a lot, you will still have a lower mileage car after many years. I bought a Blue Boxster that had 28,000 on it and it was like new. I couldnt believe it. Only one thing failed, and it was the fuel pump, an easy, $600 all-in repair. You bought a new Porsche for under $30k, thats amazing. As for buying garage queens, both my 986S and 996 were garage queens. Whats the alternative, buy a car that was beat on or abused? I test drove many of these cars that were run hard. They had the rock chips to prove it too. The truth is, every time a car is started, theres wear. Drive it up to temp and youre good. But any mileage past a certain amount does nothing but add wear to your car. All miles are not created equal. People who only drive their car in nice weather arent always doing their cars a service. A red car in California that driven in nice weather may have plenty of sun damage. Those that drive in the snow in areas where they dont salt the high quality roads are treating their cars just fine by driving in the winter. Sounds like you got a nice car, and Im guessing you will have plenty of trouble free operation as it sounds like it was well cared for.

POST 68Original post

Congrats! Enjoy it in good health and let the Porsche memories flow!

POST 69Original post

Bought my 2004 last year with 11,000 miles.. had Raby do the Solution and air/oil box and never looked back and no regrets. i do agree too low mileage can be a curse but i caught mine in time and it has exhibited zero issues and I believe this car was well bought because sometimes you Just Have a Feeling or draw to a car and it justifies paying a little more over worrying about the one that got away. Congrats i say.

POST 70Original post

Congrats!! And nice choice. For a few thousand more (if that), you got the car YOU wanted. And I bet it still smells new inside. That's worth a premium to me! I bought my 2000 in '07, with 17k miles on it, MINT shape, and never regretted not waiting for a cheaper car that wouldn't smell new!

POST 71Original post

FWIW, I paid right around there for a 2002 c2 (surprising by my screen name) w/ 24k miles, single owner, color combo I wanted, and best part was about 15 miles from my house. All that added up plus the fact that I wont do this every day - a no brainer for me and I couldnt be happier. Good Luck with your decision.

I don't chime in too often but decided to on this regard of "low mileage" cars being a detriment. Like any car buying used (and even new since often a vehicle has a "history" stemming from some port of entry mishap) a PO or dealer history if available is important. That said I have purchased 4 low mileage cars with ZERO issues over the years ( I still own them) and each has had its maintenance completed over time to retain as much as possible the condition of the car when purchased. Not going into a long slog of explanation I just prefer my personal cars clean and original. Items such as interior trim, etc are often in much better condition on low mileage cars (unless abused and this WILL be readily apparent) sorting out this kind of stuff can be extremely expensive and time-consuming to source . Now, this depends on if one cares. For example: 2002 Porsche 996 C2 located July 2015 with just under 7k miles. Sure it's "just a C2" but that was what I was looking for it's been a fantastic car. 33k at that time. 1988 Porsche 928 located November 2012 with 24k. Manual, LSD one owner. No issues to this date. $26k purchase price 1978 Jaguar XJ6L located just last November with 11.5k miles. One owner, service records for each year. But I was really only interested in the last 8 to ten years, to be honest. I drove it home from Maryland to Michigan and it was pretty much "flawless". Quotes meaning a 40 year old English car actually made it 600 miles to its destination, not on a flatbed. lol. 2005 BMW 330ci ZHP located July 2008 with 23.5k Manual, No Issues to this date (but I have a done a few mods.. -) 21k Purchase price. Retail was 31k att he time but I worked for the dealer at the time so wholesale So the "meaningless" banter above is really only stating that buy what "talks" to you. Clearly some of us...ok me... have multiple voices in their head but I digress. Research the info on your car of choice and get a PPI if you can. That said. sometimes a car DOES NOT come up again depending on what you are looking for. Low mileage or not. I missed a high mileage 1985 MR2 (AW11) body last year due to it's "high mileage" of 178k (which I found is more often average for these cars now) BUT it had all of its trim, interior and exterior was perfect in Arizona and was the color I wanted (white). all for 6k. I have not seen another like it yet close but not IT. And the prices have doubled since then for clean examples. Crap. So GO for it...If you haven't done so already. It's also an excuse to post images... lol

POST 73Original post

First of all, congratulations!! I am in complete agreement with the poster immediately above. My 2003 targa, and 2004 GT3 both had under 24,000 miles and the Boxster that I have owned since new has under 6,000 miles (actually all in kilometers up here). Our 997 turbo was purchased with 4,000 miles and now has under 7,000 miles and I have had NONE of the low mileage issues that people seem to suggest. I look for low mileage cars when buying used, and while one still needs to do a thorough inspection, there is nothing like owning a vehicle that has been well maintained and looks new top to bottom.

POST 74Original post

The low mile issue is with garage queens that may have sat for long periods without their fluids changed, like old acidic oil etching moving parts for years...If maintained properly these issues would be minimal in my opinion.

Thanks for sharing the pics. That is quite a collection of fine cars. The 996 looks awesome and I love the looks of that Jaguar! That must be quite a ride.

POST 76Original post

I think its too high, I have a 99 996 C2 aero kit in ocean blue and its a garage queen that just passed 28K Miles. Ive done IMS RMS clutch kit, tires, exhaust mod. I ceramic coated it and I dont think I can get more than 25-26K in NE. I agree that low miles could still be a problem and you need to get a thorough pre purchase inspection especially at that price.

POST 77Original post

Youre spot on. I tried to buy a 1999 aero car, all updated ims etc... one owner, low mile (30k) for almost two years. Guy wanted 30k I offered 24k. Still has car for sale at 30k.
