I bought an 2003 Targa last year with 74,000 miles, had the same issue with the drivers window, when we pulled apart it was the switch and also the window lift mechanism was "sagging",back to front.I replaced the switch and the lift cables on both doors while I was at it, cost for parts $590 and took me around 7-8hrs on both doors.

Read up first and it makes it easier, I used factory parts as the reports on after market are not good.

Currently, other than a dash rattle/squeak I can't find, the only item that seems to be an issue is the driver window doesn't retract slightly when opening the door.
Outcome qualification: Negation, uncertainty or missing explicit repair resolution overrides the raw extraction signal.

With that said, there is one upgrade that I recommend...especially is you live in a warm climate....and that's Suncoast Porsche's Targa sunshade upgrade.

I've been pretty active on a Datsun forum so I know how to use the search feature before posting dumb questions like the IMS bearing that has been beat to death.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

New member here. First time owning a Porsche. I've mostly been into the Datsun scene for a number of years. Currently have three 1967.5 Datsun Roadsters. One is a 67.5 2000. One currently operating, one a current project and one a donor. I did the frame off restoration of the current driver.
I picked up a 2003 Targa out of California a couple of weeks ago. Two owner car, 69,400 miles. Midnight Blue with a Dove Grey interior. I had SGS Independent Porsche in San Luis Obispo replace the IMS bearing, 997 rear main seal, clutch, coils and spark plugs. They had already done the water pump, alternator, serpentine belt and idler pulleys a couple of weeks prior to the sale for the prior owner. I drove it back to Salt Lake City, Utah to its new home. About 870 miles. Car ran awesome. I was able to pick this car up for about $20K. Put another $3,600 into it. As a newby, I'm going to have lots of questions. I've been pretty active on a Datsun forum so I know how to use the search feature before posting dumb questions like the IMS bearing that has been beat to death. Currently, other than a dash rattle/squeak I can't find, the only item that seems to be an issue is the driver window doesn't retract slightly when opening the door. It can create an issue closing sometimes. I can manually pull the window down and it goes back up automatically. It just doesn't retract upon opening.
I look forward to learning a lot, and hopefully contribute something. I'll try to post some pictures once we get some decent weather.
Kyle
Welcome and best of luck with your new car. I believe I saw some threads about the window situation so take a search around. I wish I had the answer for you.
You win! Sounds like a very good start. I've always wanted a Fair Lady, no - not kidding. Had a 240SX for a few years, provided very good service. Post a few more and put your location in your signature block. Pretty soon we will demand pitchurs!
Welcome, sounds like a nice 996 example and you are treating it properly. Glad to hear and looking forward to the pictures. Sorry no idea on the door window issue.
Thanks for the link. It has provided some good info. Attached is a pic of the Datsun. I'll get some photos of the Targa this weekend and post.
And my Datsun friends said "Don't join a Porsche forum" They don't want to help anyone. I think I'm off to a pretty good start. Thanks again.
I didn't realize how big these were. Should I make smaller?
Pics are fine, Datsun is amazing! Wow did you restore it yourself??? Porsche forums are extremely productive. As with most things, it is exponentially related to what you put into it.
I did everything other than the machining, and paint. Complete frame off. About 60% NOS. Everything else was refurbished. Every nut and bolt. I did a lot to the motor. .20 over Aires pistons that were teflon coated on the sleeves, ceramic coated on the tops, B cam, dual Solex carbs, balanced and all oil passages polished. A lot of work to the head improving air flow. I drive the crap out of the car, and it has seen a number of track days.
Congrats! AND beautiful Datsun. More pics please. I had a 1973 240Z when I was in the Air Force. Fun car,. Taught my 17 yo GF how to drive stick on it.
so the 02 targa i got is grey on grey. I had about 60k on it. It seems like the last few owners didnt really do much maintenance, the clutchs pretty worn out, the main seal is leaking, I dont have a clue on the ims situation, most likely hasnt been done, Im getting leaks from the fron suspension not sure why or where, and the car had bigger wheels on it so the drive feels so sloppy, I did put c4s stock wheels, but I still dont know if its the control arms or what needs to be changed. Does anyone know of a good Porsche indi shop in CA, I really need help putting this car together. To top things off the next day someone punched my windshield and now that needs to be replaced and i cant even find one for less than 1200. Please if anyone can help on to where I can take it for the mechanical work, Ill even buy all the parts myself I just want someone who knows what they are doing. Ive seen a lot of DIY on YouTube for this stuff but I cant even change my own oil yet, going to be my first time soon. Any help is really greatly appreciated.
Welcome to the club; that Datsun is really amazing, I have not seen one like that (even on JDM show) and in that mint condition, incredible. You have very high skills, that's great and as already mentioned above, please share any of your DIY's on your new 996 on this forum with pics. Also you will find a lot of info on your 996 on this forum, just do a search or ask... Some pics of your 996 will be great too, Cheers,
Hello,
DOOR and Window
I bought an 2003 Targa last year with 74,000 miles, had the same issue with the drivers window, when we pulled apart it was the switch and also the window lift mechanism was "sagging",back to front.I replaced the switch and the lift cables on both doors while I was at it, cost for parts $590 and took me around 7-8hrs on both doors. Read up first and it makes it easier, I used factory parts as the reports on after market are not good.
IMS
On the IMS, my oil samples were good, no IMS sticker any where on the car, checked with the Porsche dealer service in LA where the car came from. They only had records back for 4 yrs as they had new computer put in and they did not keep records for more that 3-4 yrs ( thats a bummer) so as preventative maintenance dropped the engine and found out that the original engine had failed under extended warranty in 2010 @41,743 miles and they put a complete new engine in the car and it was
So check your engine # first before you do anything, if I had known this I would not have bought the IMS replacement kit, I did the water pump, plugs, water tank, thermostat, some hoses while I had it out.
I have a IMS kit for sale, still in box for the 2003 model, if interested

and I can send specs and save you some money.
I have almost finished my rebuild on a 1995 993 convertible, engine, suspension, wheels, body, top and complete interior, taken nearly 2 yrs,so cant wait for spring time and will drive convertible one week and targa the next week.
Welcome and congrats on the purchase. That Datsun is beautiful! Now I want one!
These forums are invaluable, I can't imagine owning and wrenching on a car without the vast knowledge base they provide. I've found the Porsche community to be just as, and in many cases more, mature and welcoming than any other enthusiast group I've participated in. If you haven't already, check out your local PCA.
Cheers
Charlie
Nice to have another Targa owner among our ranks! Add me to the list looking forward to seeing pics.
BTW, I bought my 03' Targa three years ago...and have enjoyed every minute of using it as my DD. With that said, there is one upgrade that I recommend...especially is you live in a warm climate....and that's Suncoast Porsche's Targa sunshade upgrade. The original sunshade is pretty transparent and because of that the interior gets pretty toasty, even on mildly warm days. This upgraded sunshade, while not a blackout, does a great job of blocking more of the light which keeps the cabin more comfortable on hot days. It's not a cheap upgrade...but it's worth it in my opinion.

Here is my post from nearly 3 years ago with pictures of the upgraded Targa sunshade. Not the best pics, but gives an idea of how much light is blocked with tighter weave.

Welcome to the forum!

Welcome i also picked up a 03 Targa to complement my 997.1 Turbo. Too bad the weather is horrid and i haven't even driven it yet. Cant wait to see pics.
Thanks everyone for the warm welcome and Targa tips. I'll get a few pics posted tomorrow. This car has been crazy fun so far. I'm coming from a VW R32.

Was able to take some lame photos outside of my garage. I played with the window a bit. I get some window movement when I pull the handle and close the door so I don't think it's the motor. Probably the regulator. I'm going to pull the door apart and see for sure before I buy a new regulator. Are the aftermarket ones as bad as they say? I also worked on the foggy headlights. Started on the passenger side. It didn't seem to do much so I didn't do the driver side yet. I just can't seem to get the lens clear?
Masked off as use air orbital with 320 and then 1000, sprayed down with water so you do not over heated the plastic, then finally use electric polish with wool pad
wet sanded 320 and then 1000 before compound
Finished with clear liquid sealer, comes out great
Congrats and welcome!
The window issue - there is more than one microswitch I believe. The regulator is pretty simple, it either works or it doesnt.
Targas are rather rare and interesting
Regarding Datsun, Check out this video - fast forward to the 7 minute mark:

Only use an OE regulator as a replacement. Trust me on this. And it is simple to just pop the headlight out for polishing so you don't have to spend time masking the headlights.
I think the 991 GTS Targa look amazing. I had an 88 Targa. Back in 2004-2005, 911 Targa were cheaper than coupes and were plentiful in the market. Like the 996s are right now.
