I got turned around and swapped the clutch for the brake. I swapped them out and that did the trick.

Once it is all the way installed the brake pedal is suppose to be released and that will automatically adjust it.

Do you know if there is a way to adjust the brake light switch?

Raise and lower the spoiler and see if it changes between which 3rd brake light is illuminated.

According to the shop manual, it is a use once part, so I bought another one, but after comparing the new to the used part, I think that you can re-use your original one.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi, all. I posted here some time ago about my brake lights staying on. I purchased a new switch and finally got around to replacing it. The tail lights are still staying on. With that said, *only* the third brake light is staying on, and the other brake lights (right and left sides) aren't lighting up at all whether the pedal is pressed or not. I did pull the bulbs and they look to be just fine. Is there anything else that could be causing my third brake light to stay on? I've checked all of the fuses in the driver's compartment, and they are all fine. I'm completely stumped. Any help would be appreciated!
What year is your car so i can pull up the correct wiring diagram?
Also power "should" only be supplied by the brake light switch. Are you sure you replaced the brake light switch and not the cruise control cancel switch? The brake pedal has 2 switches. One for brake lights and the other cancels cruise when the brakes are applied.
The only separation between the regular brake lights (left and right) and the 3rd is the spoiler drive motor. I wouldn't imagine it's possible, but i guess the drive motor could short internal and send power to the 3rd brake light (doubt it though). The idea is the spoiler drive motor switches between the two different 3rd brake lights depending on if the spoiler is raised or lowered so that was they both are not in use. Raise and lower the spoiler and see if it changes between which 3rd brake light is illuminated.

Bingo! You hit the nail on the head. I got turned around and swapped the clutch for the brake. I swapped them out and that did the trick. As it turns out, *both* of my brake lights were burned out. I couldn't tell from the elements, but I bought two new ones and they're working perfectly now.
Do you know if there is a way to adjust the brake light switch? When I remove it and press the switch, the lights go off. But when installed it must be a bit short as the brake lights are staying on. I could always add a drop of hot glue to lengthen the switch, but who knows how long that will last.
The switch technically has no adjustment. It is suppose to just snap in and go. However, The part is one time adjustable. The way it is suppose to be installed is with the brake pedal depressed. Once it is all the way installed the brake pedal is suppose to be released and that will automatically adjust it. Read below for a better description from another site. Ignore the part number listed as again this is from another post and i don't know if it is correct.
The brake switch plunger length is adjustable. According to the shop manual, it is a use once part, so I bought another one, but after comparing the new to the used part, I think that you can re-use your original one. (New switch is part number is 996 613 113 01 , and it is referred to as "switch brake light", "brake light switch" and "stop light switch", available from site sponsor Suncoast for $8.52, so if you have any concerns, spend the big bucks for a new switch)
Boy oh boy... I guess it's time to order another one. I did notice a resistance when the switch arrived and I pressed it. At first I thought I had a bad switch. I probably ruined it with my poking around! Very good info--thanks!
