Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I assume the noise is caused by metal to metal contact, either bore scoring, or chains, valves, you name it, and that keeping the revs 2-3k splashes enough oil around the engine, along with increased oil pressure, that I'm preventing the metal to metal contact.
Leading evidence: 'metal' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'metal' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Install through a guy my indy knew' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Then I had it installed through a guy my Indy knew, that was another $600-$700 as I remember.

The other thing I do is run 0-40 oil to make sure the viscosity is proper for a cold start, especially in the winter.

I have used Ed's before.....you might drive your car over there during the day and let him give you some advice.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The top on my 996 is from 2011, but it has started to have issues with the cables becoming slack. I called up Riggs Bros and they said that I can either have them try to repair it (no guarantees) for $300-$500, or a new top installed would be around $1925 by reusing my headliner (or one with a smaller, glass window with a new headliner would be around $2880.
These guys seem legit, but wondering if anyone else has experiences with the tops on their cars. The top on my car looks nice, but unfortunately, the cables cannot be reused if they are stretched.
Thoughts?
I bought a new top on eBay for between $440-$500, I would have to look it up. Great top with the original fabric type. Then I had it installed through a guy my Indy knew, that was another $600-$700 as I remember. So all told I think I was about $1,100 -$1,200. I am in the Chicago area. If you want me to check where I got the top and who did the install let me know. $1,950 is pretty steep.
I have used Ed's before.....you might drive your car over there during the day and let him give you some advice. He did the top on my Alfa a few years back.

Sorry I didn't see this message! No, I did not find the cause, but when I start my car and drive off immediately, keeping revs in the 2,000-3,000 range, there is no noise. I assume the noise is caused by metal to metal contact, either bore scoring, or chains, valves, you name it, and that keeping the revs 2-3k splashes enough oil around the engine, along with increased oil pressure, that I'm preventing the metal to metal contact. It's not all that far fetched, either, based on what I've read about this engine. The other thing I do is run 0-40 oil to make sure the viscosity is proper for a cold start, especially in the winter.
So I went to see Ed and he told me pretty much the same thing as the guy at Riggs Bros:
1.) The original tops are no longer made
2.) The replacement tops aren't nearly as good as the originals
3.) With the replacement tops, everything has to be just perfect or else problems like what I'm having will crop us, almost certainly.
4.) By the time they spend T&M hours (because they cannot quote a fixed price), it could be as little as just a few hours, or as bad as two days working on the top and still facing issues, the cost could be $300-$400 for a short term fix, or up to $1500 and still not guaranteed to be a long term fix.
So the worst news is that these replacement tops will eventually have issues in a few years anyway, and by the time I spent messing with the "old" top, a new one might be just as expensive as fixing the current one.
