Having recently taken one of these g96/00 boxes apart, Id recommend against it.
Leading evidence: 'Recommend against it' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Recommend against it' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I would probably go for that, and might open up the transmission to see for myself if its possible to simply remove something and replace the end case with one from a C2.

I agree with you, since thats the case that the shaft an pinion needs to be replace, its a no go.

No need to replace the output shaft to convert to two wheel drive, Remove the tail housing and cut off the output shaft extension with a abrasive cutoff wheel.

The questions is if its possible to remove the output shaft parts inside the C4 transmission an just leave it like that(cover up for the oil of course) or replace some parts with something from the c2 transmission.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello everyone!
I have a 996 C2 -99 with a broken transmission. Since a 4S transmission seems to be more common on the used market I am wondering if its possible to just remove the parts connecting to the propshaft, or maybe replace them with some parts from the C2 transmission? And get a "normal" C2 transmission.
Best regards
Robert
Thank you, although it doesnt answer my wonderings completely.
The questions is if its possible to remove the output shaft parts inside the C4 transmission an just leave it like that(cover up for the oil of course) or replace some parts with something from the c2 transmission.
You can put a C4 transmission into a C2 with no further mods needed (aside from the minor mods explained in the thread linked above). You can leave the output shaft in place, you don't need to remove it.
I would probably go for that, and might open up the transmission to see for myself if its possible to simply remove something and replace the end case with one from a C2.
Having recently taken one of these g96/00 boxes apart, Id recommend against it.
What you propose is major invasive surgery, and youll want to have very advanced DIY skills (beyond 99% of most shadetrees), a well stocked shop, and access to a good machine shop with a serious press.
If you send it out to be done, youll have more into it than you do for the purchase price of the used box.
The something you mention changing out is the output gear shaft and matching pinion, and you arent just going to pop it out.
The /00 nosecone seems to go for $250 used if you can find them. Then youll need the shaft and pinion.
Be prepared to reshim everything. Good times.
My unsolicited suggestion is to just buy a /00 box, or a /01 and modify the output flange.
That was the answer I was looking for. I have been looking at exploded drawings to find out if there is different shafts or how the 4wd parts are installed. Have not find part numbers for the shafts, maybe there are not available separate?
I agree with you, since thats the case that the shaft an pinion needs to be replace, its a no go.
The 4wd shaft and pinion set are different and have have a separate part number. Over $3000 new.

Look on the far right for transmission codes - the 4wd is the g96/01 and g96/31 (g96.01 and g96.31).
Yeah, that was the parts I was looking for. Was not sure the complete shaft went all the way through to the propeller shaft flange though so thats why I hoped/guess it was all the same until there.
No need to replace the output shaft to convert to two wheel drive, Remove the tail housing and cut off the output shaft extension with a abrasive cutoff wheel. Put the appropriate plug in the output shaft housing, there is a Porsche part number for it for the 2 wheel drive case and you are done.
