Suggestion
All you have to do is disconnect the airbag and insert the resistor into the airbay connector.

BTW, my dealings with the seller of the wheel as well as with Gert, who was recommended by the seller, were excellent.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Got this from a member here and got the hub adapter from Gert Carnewal. Installed yesterday and I love the look and feel of the new wheel. This one is 350mm so not much smaller than stock and I did not go with the offset mounting adapter so my gauges are somewhat hidden by the top of the wheel. Horn works and the airbag light is defeated. The shop added a couple connectors so I can revert to stock if I so desire but that is doubtful.

Gert sent me this:
Hi Elliott,
Here are some instructions :
Switching on the ignition without the airbag connected will cause the airbag light to come on.
Removal of the original steering wheel :
Disconnect the battery and wait for 15min. before doing any changes to the steering wheel.
Remove the original airbag by removing the 2 torx headed bolts on the backside of the steering wheel.
Disconnect the electrics of the airbag and the horn button.
Remove the big nut (24mm) that holds the steering wheel onto the shaft.
Put the steering level (perfectly horizontal) before you remove the steering wheel.
Remove the clock spring. Cut the wires 20mm from the clock spring.
The resistor is wired onto the 2 wires that normally went to the airbag.(green/red and green/blue) That will trick the airbag light.
The 2 other wires that normally went into the clock spring are for the horn and are a ground and the horn contact. (when the ground and horn contact are connected, the horn will sound) The ground wire is not used as the horn button gets ground through the shaft.
The horn contact wire needs to be wired to the sliding contact.
The sliding contact plugs into the steering column where the clock spring used to be.
See picture.
Installation :
Put the steering wheel over the shaft.
Tighten the main nut : 45Nm.
Reconnect the battery.
Thank you,
Gert.
There are a few threads from a UK site that have photos of the connectors you need to access for the horn and airbag connections. Gert included the new horn contact and the proper resistor for the airbag light defeat with the MOMO adapter. Not quite plug and play but not difficult.
You won't regret it!
BTW, my dealings with the seller of the wheel as well as with Gert, who was recommended by the seller, were excellent. Quick shipping by both and great communication.
Good question. For now I’m going to keep it. My thought is that if I decide to sell the car the next buyer might want the original wheel. I have no plans to sell the car so that may change.
The wheel was $175, the hub and "bits" was $150 USD from Gert and the install was $200 though you can do it yourself if you have more skill than me (limited skill HaHa). Very worth it for me. A new MOMO wheel like this is about $275 but they have many models.
Darn it, you got me shopping for a Momo wheel.
I think it would look great with my Function First shift ****.
Do you happen to know the model name of your Momo wheel?
I've had this for sale on CL with no takers. Came off my '85 Carrera. Now you have me thinking....its smaller than the 996 wheel. I could use the leg room.
The one I got is the MOMO Race. 350mm, which in my opinion is the smallest I would go for street use though smaller would be great for track.
I grew up in the 60's and I have been a seatbelt supporter since day 1. I just cannot drive the car unless the seatbelt is on and snug. So my feeling is while the airbag is certainly a plus, I am willing to trust the seatbelts while preserving the airbag for the passenger. Also any side airbags the car has will still function.
I had a smaller wheel like that in my '87 Carrera. It was a bear to turn without power steering -- not straining, but just enough resistance to make driving less fun (at least in my '87). Seems like it would be great in a 996 with power steering.
Im not sure which safety device is more effective, one or the other, but Im guessing the seatbelt is.
Regardless, the feel of the MOMO wheel is probably amazing. To be honest, when it comes to driving a sports car, two of the most important items are the seat and the steering wheel (for me at least).
I had a MOMO on my 88 Targa and it felt amazing.
But if you remove your airbag, you'll die in an accident!
I drove cars without airbags for decades and I'm still here.
I never really trusted airbags, and when they first came out I swore off them.
I often said, when Indycar has airbags, I'll buy a car with them.
Alas I gave in about four years ago.
I'll gladly drop the airbag.
85eurocarerra, how much are you asking for your steering wheel?
I wouldn’t put it in your 996, it would just look wrong and would be unsafe.
Instead, sell it to me and I’ll put it in MY 996.
It would look better in mine.
I’ll probably pick up a brand new one.
I just ordered a hub from Gert and will get the wheel once I have the hub.
I already have a bunch of stuff ready to go on the car.
I’m hoping to install the coilovers in about a month if I’m feeling good then, and I don’t have other things on my calendar.
I could always squeeze the steering wheel in first since that won’t take too long and doesn’t require a wheel alignment.
Im sorry to point this out, but the installation of the wheel has caused a significant increase in engine temp. You may need to revert back to the standard wheel.
Ha, youre right about my reasoning!
Wish I could say the same health wise.
I had a heart attack at 42 that should have killed me.
It was a dissection that happened just after a run.
It has an extremely high fatality rate.
Now Im 51 and was I just finished chemo a few weeks ago.
But airbags...meh, Ive never trusted them.
Early on I saw too many people get injured by the airbag in minor accidents.
Granted, theyve improved them so people dont get broken noses for 10 mph collisions.
But seeing that Takata made so many defective airbags...my trust level in airbags has diminished.
I wonder about the airbags in 996s..
Were they made by Takata?
Are they ok?
Or are they too old to make the safety recall cut?
Looks great! I installed a MOMO Prototipe wheel in my 944 and love it, just not sure if Id want to go without the airbag since its a daily driver...
One question though - you seem to have the same Pioneer headunit as I. Do you know which surround youve got? Seems to fit much better than mine... and, where did you source the tray above the heater controls?
Many thanks!
You don't have to cut anything. All you have to do is disconnect the airbag and insert the resistor into the airbay connector. It take 10 seconds to install the resistor and wrap it with electrical tape and you have the airbag light defeated.
Sorry I had it installed by a local shop here in NJ who deals with the local Porsche dealer. They are called SoundWaves in Parsippany, NJ. Call Vinny and I'm sure he can tell you which surround they use. BTW they did an excellent job with the install of the head unit, the speakers and the sub with hand built enclosure.
I'm glad it didn't sell. Air bag bypass and horn works. Yeah, still need to finish putting in the other screws.😎 I gained about an inch of thigh room...
another angle
what is this "the offset mounting adapter" you speak of?! I just installed a MOD 78 in my 996 and the only thing I dont like about it is I can't really see the gauges..
Wow, glad to hear you made it through, keep fighting! We are all pulling for you! I bet it makes the appreciation level for these cars and the experience that much more sweet.
Heres the one I used. Moves the wheel up about , doesnt sound like much but I now can see the gauges! Easy install. No affiliation with the company, just a happy client.
