Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Same here, and must have changed over 100 wheels the “old school” way.
Leading evidence: 'Replace over 100 wheels the “old school” way' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check tomorrow' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Use on vw, bmw, mercedes, and likely some porsches too

There are also M12 x 1.5 bolts (17mm socket) used on VW, BMW, Mercedes, and likely some Porsches too.

Never knew this device existed nor did I know there should be one in my toolkit-I'll check tomorrow.

Suggestion
I change my tires/wheels over twice a year(summer to winter then back to summer) and always struggle to lineup that first lugnut and sometimes the second when putting the wheel back on..

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The last time I took my tire off I nearly blew a nut out of my trousers.
seeing this on eBay I picked it up.
I didnt pay much so I wasnt expecting much.
Totally surprised at the quality.
This thing kicks ***!
I have extras for most German cars in the workshop area.
That way I don't have to fish it out of a customer's toolkit or my own.
Aftermarket ones seem to be longer than OEM, which makes them even easier to use.
My car has studs and lugnuts instead of wheel bolts, but I still have a wheel hanger in my toolkit just in case someone needs to borrow it.
I use the one from my tool roll, but wanted a second one to keep the wheel in position. I went to the hardware store and bought the longest bolt I could (it is about 5" long) that had that thread on it, then ground the hex head off on my bench grinder.
This thread is going to make my life a little easier. I change my tires/wheels over twice a year(summer to winter then back to summer) and always struggle to lineup that first lugnut and sometimes the second when putting the wheel back on.. Never knew this device existed nor did I know there should be one in my toolkit-I'll check tomorrow.
Learn something new every day.
I had a 1987 Mercedes 560SL and had to buy one of these. It was impossible to line things up without it!! When I sold the car I kept it - it was threaded at both ends and it should work as an extra for the 996. Now all I need to get is a lift of some kind.
It probably won't fit.
My 1983 Mercedes (and my 2009 BMW) had smaller 17mm lug bolts.
The thread on those were M12 x 1.5.
The Porsche 996 uses 19mm lug bolts.
The thread size on those are M14 x 1.5
I used it initially and then found that you can place the wheel on the hub and as long as its flat it stays in place. Then I just spin the wheel to line up the holes. Not using spacers so your situation(s) may be different.
Same here, and must have changed over 100 wheels the “old school” way. I thought the thread title was referring to hanging wheels in the garage.
Would these fit most european cars or do they come in different threads for different makes/models?
They will fit any car that uses M14 x 1.5 wheel bolts.
Pretty much any wheel bolt that uses a 19mm socket.
There are also M12 x 1.5 bolts (17mm socket) used on VW, BMW, Mercedes, and likely some Porsches too.
Those are the only sizes I've ever encountered.
I wish european tow hooks (tow eyes) were more standard like wheel bolts and brake reservoir caps!
M14 x 1.5
M14 = bolt diameter
1.5 = metric thread pitch (NOT length)
