Leading evidence: 'Replace every year' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check pickup' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Noteworthy: One year ago I changed the oil filter for a spin-on version.

Yes I thought about that, but the filter has been changed one year ago with a NAPA element.

Suggestion
The reason I suspect the NAPA filter is the all the previous filters were the cartridge type (can't help but to take a peek at the filter element when changing).

Suggestion
Most Mechanics or shops (unless race shop or 996 specialist) don't have an oil filter cutter, it's just not something that 98% of the oil changes require.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi guys,
today I removed the oil pan of my 2003 996 4S. At the oil pick up I noticed some fluffy debris. No plastic, not metal. In the bottom of the pan: nothing what so ever. Noteworthy: One year ago I changed the oil filter for a spin-on version. Otherwise the car runs fine: oil pressure OK. I run 5w40 Castrol which is changed every year. Please enlighten me on this one.
Pull the NAPA filter and cut it open, see if it has came apart, **** happens. The NAPA filter has no by-pass so can build up excessive pressure if the temperature is extremly cold, too thick oil, engine is revved too much while cold. Cut the filter open and inspect.
Right, but whats to say it was this filter? When was the last time you pulled the pan? Could have been from a previous filter. Could still be the NAPA. A year is a while, depending on how many miles you drove.
The reason I suspect the NAPA filter is the all the previous filters were the cartridge type (can't help but to take a peek at the filter element when changing). The OP stated that he had changed to the spin-on type filter (NAPA) a year ago. I guess we will see when he cuts it open.

The Napa Gold is the best filter on the market. Constantly we are cutting filters open, and examining them.
85eurocarrera, you are losing a cylinder. That material is the piston skirt coating. Can I use this picture in an article I am working on now on bore scoring? This is an exceptional photo!
It's actually my photo. I sent it to you several years ago and you kindly informed me of the bad news. You are welcome to use it. I quickly traded that car in and got over my desire to ever buy another 996.
Well, I'm no expert and that (piston skirt coating) would have been my first guess. It looks like a plastic/teflon type material and the lines relate to the machining of the skirt...Have you ever had Teflon/non-stick coating peel from a pot or a pan? Very similar looking... This being said, the op "funk" clearly looks like paper? Maybe a careless mechanic either lost/left a paper towel into the motor when putting it back together?
That material is ferrous, and is the iron phosphate coating from the piston skirts. This is stage 1 of bore scoring, as the bore scoring is really collateral damage from this failure.
The coating is very thin/fine. The closest thing I've seen like it is gold leaf.
Hated to see that car go. It was a factory aerokit car with sport exhaust, M030 suspension, and sport seats.
Yeah, saw #11 reply. Seems to have thrown J R a bit of a curve. We're sorry Illini's luck was bad. Just a little puzzled by his post. What did your foriegn material end up being?
Until OP rvanhaasen comes back after doing more investigation we're just waiting. Obviously as in my case with finding piston skirt coating, there are worse things to find in a pickup tube.
Okay, will wait to hear what that stuff in his sump is.
Sorry to hear that your engine suffered the dreaded scoring and or piston damage. What size engine did you have?
This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
