Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

11 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

All, Thank you for looking, I am considering a used 996 and have the DME report, this would be my first 996 (had an older air cooled 911) and very excited about the more modern performance and HVAC. Can folks with more experience than I comment on these numbers? Number of programming operations: 1 Number of ignitions, range 1: 24316 1061.0 h Number of ignitions, range 2: 1 879.5 h Order type: 996430 Operating hours counter: 1065.2 Total Distance: 52494 km Thank you!

POST 2Original post

One overrev 185.7 engine hours ago. I wouldn’t worry about that. It has averaged 49 km/h, which is about what would be expected. Whoever has been driving it has hit the rev limiter quite a bit. Last time was 4.2 engine hours ago It has nice low miles. I would also want an AOS Test and the sump dropped and bores scoped.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thank you Tex Squirrel, I thought any over-revs in Range 2 was bad? And you were right about your rev limiter comment, the tech who performed the PPI wrote there was excessive time at redline. Would those two issues steer you away from the car? Needs RMS as well.

POST 4Original post

1 overrevs is possibly not even real. Also, I thought the overrev hours wasnt time since the overrev, but rather, how many hours took place before the overrev happened? So if the engine had 3,000 hours and the overrev was 2,999, it happened 1 hr ago? http://www.911virgin.com/porsche/rev-range-information/

POST 6Original post

Correct, and correct. If engine has 3000 hours and overrev was at 2999 it happened 1 hour ago. Was that not what I said?

POST 7Original post

Quotes source post: 15569469

Yeah, sorry, you did say that. Range 1 for his car happened only 4 hours ago.

No, those two items wouldn't deter me if everything else checks out. (Clean sump, no scoring in cylinders, camshaft deviation, etc)

POST 9Original post

As previously mentioned, the report numbers are fine. Has this car been doing any track duty? Cumulative operating time in range 1 is 1 min 7 sec (8105/7200) for a car with under 1100 hours. I drive my car hard and have 1700 range 1 for 3400 hours. I don’t believe too many 996 drivers routinely wind the engine up over 7200 rpm launching from a stop or out of a corner, but I’m sure some do. For me, 6800 rpm is the shift target. 996 NA torque drops off past 6800ish anyway (ballpark catch-all). My pure guess would be these are mechanical over-revs from poor downshifts and not rev matching. That could mean extra gearbox wear-and-tear. My only other thought is if the previous owner was a driver who liked stomping on the gas and hitting 7200 for show, did he/she do this before the engine was properly to temperature? Just some points to ponder. Good hunting!

POST 10Original post

With an average to 49km/h (30mph) and a total distance of 52494km (32618 miles) I doubt that it has been tracked a lot. At least not on a high speed track. Maybe autocrossed? It's probably more likely to hit red-line while autocrossing than daily driving. (Almost to the turn...I don't want to shift...I'm almost there...ARRGH!)
