Suggestion

I tried just for fun to use two fingers to try and open the door or grab it with the whole mitt and there is pretty much no other way it works but the single finger method.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I feel bad for him. He looks so bored and maybe depresed? Compare this with his enthusiastic gt3 review You Tube Im sure its a great car and yes, the turbos sounds great.

POST 2Original post

I wonder when the last time he drove a 996 was cause that 992 sounds nothing like any 996 Ive ever heard.

POST 4Original post

Like I said, it doesnt sound like any 996 Ive ever heard. But, his memory of the 996 exhaust note(s) may be slightly skewed by his 991.2 GT3 ownership (and the fact that hes always around 991s for his profession). After becoming accustomed to that 4 liter in the 1.2 GT3 and not hearing a 996 for a while, I could see someone thinking the 992 sounds similar to a 996.

POST 5Original post

I think he's referring to the intake sound. It sounds very similar to a 996 with a resonator/helmholtz delete.

POST 6Original post

Quotes source post: 15575076

I disagree on the sound similarity. But, regardless of that, Im pretty sure that he, in the context of the sound and character of the turbocharged 3 liter in the 992, was referring to the overall engine sound while in operation and not the intake sound specifically. Otherwise, I believe Chris Harris wouldve specifically pointed to induction noise and compared it, specifically, to the 996. Again, to my ear, there is hardly any similarity. Now, compared to a GM LS engine, sure, the 992 and 996 sound similar. But apples to apples, the new(er) 3 liter turbo doesnt sound anything like the M96 in any form with any combination of any intake or any exhaust Ive ever heard. The 911 hasnt sounded like the 996, which sounds way more similar to the air cooled cars (by design) than the modern stuff (especially turbod) since the introduction of DFI in the 7.2. Now they sound slightly higher pitched and more exotic. That fact may bother some, but Im very happy with what the 911 sound has evolved into. I think the 996 should have sounded like a more modern car and this couldve been achieved with the center muffler design found on modern 911s after they ditched the ridiculous crossover design - the whole point of which was to make the car sound more like an air cooled 911. The center muffler provides a similar benefit to the x pipe, but also allows for tone tuning beyond what the side mufflers accomplish. With the DFI, there is a definite change in the sound of combustion regardless of exhaust design and tuning. There is no way an M96/7 will ever sound like any of the DFI 911 engines. If such a solution exists, please point me to it because Ive searched high and low for such a thing and it aint out there. The closest an M96/7 might get to sounding like a modern 911 is the 7.2 GT3, but even that still sounds more like the older engine (because it is) with different exhaust tone engineering, especially in the center muffler. In fact, the center muffler bypasses everyone seems to love putting on their 997 GT3 (because most patrons in the exhaust aftermarket are looking almost exclusively at increased volume with almost zero regard for tone) reverts the sound back to something more akin to a 996 GT3, which I dont think sounds as good (not that it sounds even close to bad, just not as good as the DFI engines). This is all subjective, I suppose. The reason I looked into this topic at all is because, even before I actually purchased my 996 Carrera, I wanted to find a way to make it, or any M96/7-equipped 911, sound like a 991 GT3 because I think they sound better than any 911 and make among the best sounds of any car in general (E60 M5, LFA, and Carrera GT are the best IMO). Having spent an inordinate amount of time listening to every 996 sound clip on the internet - from Fister modded Carreras to rally GT3s - reading through threads started by (and talking to) others who had been on a similar quest, I have concluded that it is impossible to make an M96/7 sound like the DFI engines. One can get close, but not anything like what that 992 sounds like. At least not to my ear. For reference (and fun), here is what I think 911 exhaust perfection sounds like: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Ef4aANn1Cqw&list=PLG_BGdABDC9udDXy9IR0zKLb0wegoOy0K&index=15&t=0s

POST 7Original post

I thought his frustration with the door handles was pretty funny. Certainly a gimmicky departure for Porsche.

POST 8Original post

His door handle comment had me thinking yesterday while I was driving mine. The 996 door handle is great, but it is a bit funny when you think about it. There is a certain way I personally open the door every time. I put only my middle finger in the door handle and pull with the tip of my finger. The handle requires a truly unique way to open that I've never come close to the same on any other car. I tried just for fun to use two fingers to try and open the door or grab it with the whole mitt and there is pretty much no other way it works but the single finger method. Lol. As far as the sound, from simply inside the cabin (have no idea about outside) the 992 from the video sounds very similar to my Helmholtz delete with Dansk Super Sport exhaust. I'll have to hook up the old go pro for comparison sake. *** Also what happened to the original post with the 996 sound reference comment... missing.

POST 9Original post

RE: sound, my Dad doesn't really like the 996 because it doesn't sound like an air-cooled motor. We all establish baselines at some point. I love my 996, but my personal preference is for the sound of a screaming air-cooled 911 as well. The new 992 is an amazing car, but Porsche is getting gimmicky with some of the new tech crap. The pop-out door handles are bound to break shortly after the warranty period and the new Panamera controls the AC vent position via a touch screen because apparently we've all had so much trouble moving vents with our finger tips over the years. Porsche is solving problems that never existed. You Tube

Good gawd! I dont even like the AC/Heat controls on my 996. If I want to go from cold to hot I gotta press the button 15 times. In my 2019 Ford Edge, I turn a dial. Old school, but simple and quicker.

POST 11Original post

I hope I didnt give the impression that I think the 996 sounds like an air cooled engine. I dont think that. It sounds no more like an air cooled engine than the DFI engines sound like a 996. But Porsche tried to make the 996 sound air cooled and it does sound more like the air cooled 911s, as equipped from the factory (with the independent crossover exhaust system), than it does the 997.2 and onward. Dude, seriously - the HVAC controls in the 996 are the worst! A dial would be nice, but at least it could move a tiny bit faster than frozen molasses when the button is held down. I try to use the windows and sunroof as climate control as often as possible because of it. The M3 had a dial and I took it for granted.

My god that is ridiculous.... long live my 996 and its caveman design type interior....
