Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

17 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

If I am stopped at a red light and shift to 1 st when the light turns green, once in awhile I will be in reverse rather than 1 st. My work around is to always ship to 2nd and then slide the shifter straight up to 1 st. Does anyone else have this problem? Is there a fix for it or do you just use my work around?

POST 2Original post

When was last time shift cables were adjusted? If you DIY it’s a 30 minute job, if you have the shifter lock tool (the green bridge thing).

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

To the best of my knowledge it's never been done. where do I get the green bridge thing?

POST 5Original post

My shifter has a pretty good...um what to call it? It takes a pretty good push to get past the spring to move it into reverse. Maybe your spring is weak. Never have missed a shift into first as opposed to reverse.

Where did you find it?

POST 8Original post

Agree. I have to go neutral then pull it to the left, intentionally, to enter the reverse gate. OP's shifter sounds sloppy to me.

Link? I could only find it for 997 987...didn't list compatibility with 996. ty

POST 10Original post

Ty, The green shifter lock tool works with any 996/997 shifter...and it makes the job exceptionally simple.

Any other instructions available?

POST 12Original post

B&M short shifter install instructions from are very comprehensive, with clear photos. Pelican Parts tech articles has a tutorial that is also ok, but not as clear as the B&M instructions.

POST 13Original post

I had this issue too, it turns out there's a shift cable that runs under the car and it popped out of the harness making it extremely easy to shift into reverse. I popped it back in and it was perfect.

I meant how to use or exactly what the green shift lock tool is for and or how to use it?

POST 15Original post

The green tool works on standard 997 (maybe 996 not sure) shift mechanisms. It locks onto the shifter housing and keeps the shifter straight. It allows you to align the shifter to centre. You then slide the cables into the holder, if it wasn't for the tool the shifter could be slightly left or right and also too far foward or back. It does make a difference in shifting as well - although I've read some people say it's just to align the mechanism.

DB Joe 996: Please advise where the spring is. My only experience with shifters is on my 65 Vette
