Suggestion
I wholeheartedly recommend installing the pre-cut headlight film, more so to protect the lenses against cracks/chips from road debris than to maintain clarity.

LOL remind me of a time when buddy and I would do a clutch change by lifting the engine by hand on the Bug Eye with the huge 948 cc engine..
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Thanks to you intrepid rennlisters, I'm in the midst of refinishing my headlights this weekend (esp. TexSquirrel for his encouragement and the suggested technique to pop out the headlight washer with a bicycle pump).
I just had to share this picture where the 996 seems totally impaired (land of misfit toys?) sitting right next to the totally alert bugeye.
Love the red paint and early bugeye front treatment (1959?). On the track recently? So far our bugeye has been purely for cruising up and down the peninsula...
1959. It's a lot redder in the flesh, cell phone camera doesn't do it justice. Minimania 1275 also, so a little more uumpf. Sadly it's seen very little daylight recently, little kid keeping us busy, my wife used to be very active in the Bugeye scene, indeed it's her second, the first having flipped in a rally and got her a helicopter ride.
We need to see an after picture too.
I used to AutoX back in the 80s with someone who had a Bugeye Sprite with a Mazda rotary engine.
That thing was fast!
A LOT faster than my 1987 VW Scirocco 16V.
Ah, right! Two pictures below. First is with only the left headlight done and next is with both done. My family is marveling at how much "newer" the 996 looks after the refinishing. The last coating step of the Meguiars's kit req'd 24hrs to cure and it's been raining here so I'm looking forward to driving to work tomorrow with shiny new headlights. Considering buying the lamin-x pre-cut covers to get some extra protection. Any opinions?
Re: bugeye's, ours is actually super slow with the original size 948cc engine and 43hp, an "upgraded" ribcase transmission and no synchro in first. I like it because it's the antithesis of my 996 and I can motor around slowly and feel content.
I bet the red looks awesome in person. I've never driven one with a 1275. When I get our 948 up to ~70mph I'm glad it can't go any faster. I hope your wife recovered OK after the rally incident... Yikes!
The lights look great!
Wait and see how long the protectant works.
I find that car stored outside will start to yellow again in about a years time.
I've had some repeat customers in the last 5 years.
Cars stored in garages seems to last a lot longer.
If it doesn't last long, then definitely get the pre-cut UV protectant vinyl covers.
If you have to re-do it, at least you know how easy it is to do.
I wholeheartedly recommend installing the pre-cut headlight film, more so to protect the lenses against cracks/chips from road debris than to maintain clarity. A new headlight will run you anywhere from $1200 (halogen) to $2500+ (HID),

I used XPEL's precut headlight films and installed them myself. It's a simple job. FWIW, they've been on the (garaged) car for about 9 years, no visible deterioration or discoloration.
P.S. I love the oriental rug on which you park your 996. Nice touch!
Yes I was thinking about this. My company recently moved offices and now my car is parked outside all day so I do think I'll look into the cover film.
Thanks for the recommendation on the XPEL film. I'll look into it.
The rug is one of those things that just happened. It was getting too threadbare for the living room but seemed to have life left in it, so I tossed it in the garage and 20yrs later there it still sits. It does make it nicer when crawling under the car. The rug would never survive under the sprite. Instead it gets a metal catch pan...
Then I would definitely get the cover film.
Luckily my car is garaged at home and at work.
I'd recommend Xpel as well.
From what I've seen it is a quality product.
