I have to look at the records but I believe one of the cables was replaced by the PO at some point at the dealer.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a 2004 C4S with approximately 100,000 miles. A year or so ago I installed the function first shifter assembly. That all went fine. The car shifts just fine. However, the spring return that centers the shifter in the 3/4 plane is weak. I notice it more when I go from my Subaru XT Wagon which has an aftermarket shifter that is very notchy feeling. Is this a cable issue or something internal to the trans. I have to look at the records but I believe one of the cables was replaced by the PO at some point at the dealer. Typical of him he didn't do both.

POST 2Original post

There is no "spring" to speak of. The spring effect is caused by the cables (technically it is a "spring"- just not in the sense of a dedicated spring somewhere in the housing) being pushed sideways against it's length. It's possible that the end of the cable has slipped out of it's mount at the base of the housing and is therefore not giving the proper tension. This would probably affect shifting/finding gears as well though...

POST 3Original post

^This Both the transmission end and the shifter console ends. They can be put back in, factory clips can be replaced/reinserted (if still present), and reinforced (or replaced) with a zip tie or safety wire. The other related failure I've experienced is the cable end caps at the shifter end coming off - the tab/slot arrangement was cracked allowing the cable and cap to separate - creating a mushy feeling in the shifter.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the input! It can be a little finicky going into second if I am lazy with it. I may just get a cable set for it and do it right this time :-)
