WD-40'd the snot out of the mechanism, and once I used a screwdriver to reset it, seems okay.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

11 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Left work, opened fine, got home, hit the switch, heard a little noise, not the usual big clunk. Went around front, tried the remote while listening, I could hear something in there trying to move, but it won't open. I tried pushing on it while clicking the remote, no joy. What do I do? I have stuff in the trunk I need!

POST 2Original post

Try to find the emergency release cable behind the bumper. I would also keep trying to push on it while clicking the remote.

Any idea where to start looking? I have wire mesh over the holes, so if I have to go fishing I'll have to break the wire mesh.

POST 4Original post

Did you not notice it's location when you had your bumper off to do the mesh? Is it full with something pushing on it? The emergency cable is there for a reason. Fish for it with a coat hanger. Some have said you can see it through the side marker or you'll have to remove your wheel and liner.

What a complete pain in the ****. Dumbest design Porsche made. You could always sell it and buy a Mk1 and not have to worry about it anymore.

POST 6Original post

If it was never moved, you can probably find it by removing the front passenger wheel and pulling out the liner a bit. It can be a pain - literally. Check behind the hole for the tow hook. Some people move it there when they have the bumper off. Some people tape it to the underside of the front bumper. Good luck.

POST 8Original post

My 99 has a mechanical pull lever to release the frunk and engine cover latches. No electrical power needed.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

All fixed! Jacked it up, turned wheel, took off passenger front tire liner, pulled on cable. WD-40'd the snot out of the mechanism, and once I used a screwdriver to reset it, seems okay. Tried it out about 20 times. I'm not going to put anything in the trunk for a week, while still opening it each time I would have to test it out. Thanks for the help everyone!

I'm not sure about 99, but my 00 has a mechanical release lever but still needs a battery to open the frunk due to an electric lock. The engine lid is completely mechanical.
